    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Idles too high!

Hey guys, just got my bike up and running last weekend, however, I did notice something:

When I first start the bike, it'll idle at 1k rpm. However, if I let it warm up for about 3-4 minutes, it'll idle at 3k-3.5k rpm! I've ordered intake boots and o-rings, but I also read that it may be a fuel mixture screw setting? Where are the fuel mixture screws?

I cleaned the carbs myself, but am not entirely sure what all the parts are. I cleaned the fuel bowls, float needles, floats, float needle passage and emulsion needle/screws, and that finally got the bike running.

Are the fuel mixture screws on the outside of the carbs, or do I have to go and pull the carbs out again.

The bike is a 1981 650GL
 
Not the best photo but it shows you were the pilot screws are. Suzuki installed a cap over the screws that will need to be removed before the screws can be adjusted.

In terms of carb rebuilding, cycleorings.com sells kits which are highly recommended - the old o-rings get hard and brittle and should be changed if you haven't already done so.

Like I said, I got the boots and o-rings on order, from the place you recommended, great prices!

Anyways, once they get here, I'll check the screws after. Is it more likely that it's the rings and boots, rather than the air screw? How do I set the air screws?
 
lightly bottom them out the what 2 1/2 turns out i think??? you may have to play with it
 
i think so i have a jet kit in an mine were to be 4.5 out i remember seeing somewhere here is was suggested 2.5 turns out from bottom

so yea all the way in lightly the back em out i have to play with mine when it gets warmer out.
 
Hmm, alright, but is it possible that the screws are the reason for the idle problems, more so than the boots? Why is it that the bike idles really high after warming up?
 
Most likely an air leak from the boot O-rings. Boots often are fine. A lean pilot screw setting can cause a hanging idle, but typically they won't cause an increasing idle like you are experiencing.
 
yeah poor ole bike are very finicky when it comes to leaks but be thankfull this site is around lots of info here and good people
 
If it is infact the rings/boots, I assume that as the bike warms up, the rubber flexes, and then causes an airleak in a crack in the boot or the orings, causing a lean condition? If it is this problem, then spraying a little starter fluid near the boot should cause the bike to change in rpm, right?

Two of the boots look fine, but two of them have tears where you attach the screws to the boots. However, they are firmly attached to the cylinder head. I did order new ones anyways.
 
yeah if they are soft you should be good and yeah if you spray something and the idle changes you have some leaks.

could be something simple like intake o-rings or could be a boot
