A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Igniter Unit (CDI) repaired?

Can the igniter unit be repaired? I have one that appears to be causing my headaches and price of a new unit is close to $450, that's half the value of what I purchased the bike for. Are these repairable? If not, who has used good ones? I checked E-bay and Craig's List, but there's nothing that match the model number on my existing unit (32900-49420). Is there a used supplier that anyone can recommend who can be trusted to have working units... at a fair price (I know that's asking a lot!)

The coils tested good, as did the magneto, so it HAS to be the CDI, right? The bike is a 1983 GS850G, great bike and fun when it runs, but at this point it looks to be worth more in parts. Gah! Just frustrated, I'd never do that. HELP!

The 1100G and 850G for '82 and '83 share the same ignitor. You might want to try expanding your search. Ignitors come up from time to time and typically sell for less than $50 here. One other option is to install a Dyna S which costs about $120. You will need a mechanical advance device from an early 1000 but they are easy to come by (I have a spare if you want to go this route).

Edit: here is one that I think is the same as yours. Not cheap but about 25% of the new price. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Suzu...s?hash=item518b8de0ae&_trksid=p4506.m20.l1116

Good luck,

Igniter unit

I just replaced my signal generator on an 83 850, which attaches to your CDI. The part number matched up to other 1100 models in 82 and a few in 84. I finally found one on ebay that was close enough and worked.

Have you pulled the cover to check your signal generator? Sometimes the magnets in there get gapped out of round and might mess up the signal to your CDI. Make sure everything is tight in there and the copper contacts are clean. Also, it is a pretty long cable run from the signal generator to the CDI next to some hot metal. Make sure the wire is not melted.

If the bike was ever laid down on its right side, that could be the source of your problem.

Not to nit pick but GS bikes don't use a CDI, they use an ignitor which is different.

I have compared the GS1000 & GS450 Igniters on/off for two years and don't see how they can compare. No obviously if the part numbers are different they can only be compared by looking at both schematics.

At first I thought your diagram had mistakes. For example, while the GS1000 uses 2SD977, the GS450 uses 2SD799. If you look at the photo of the components inside the Ignitor closely you will be able to read the output transistors that are actually marked D977
I am unable to find a DARLINGTON datasheet on the 2SD977. I have only found it shown as obsolete and the direct equivalent shown as given in the document. Maybe the 2SD799 could work as a replacement if available?

Also, your TCI, CDI, Ignitor, Igniter, Tr.Igniter or whatever it is has no output capacitor... Thats right see photo and schematic

Has this TR.Igniter been addressed already? Not sure what you are asking.

I would appreciate a copy of the 450 schematic if you have it.:)

As far as the 2SD977 goes:

use 2SD978, 2SD835, BU806, or 2SD789 - 799

the 2SD799, use BU912 or 2SD 798

The BU devices are easy to find, and very cheap.

Whilst the 2SD799 is rated at 30W dissipation, the BU912 is 60W.
The 2SD1409A is only rated at 25W..

All the other values are fine, the switch times are the same.. only the wattage differs.. pin for pin it should work OK...
