DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi, seems my old account is dead and gone? My last thread was after my accident with my GS750 at the beginning of 2012.

Anyway I created a new account because I have great news.

I might be getting me a GS850GL soon. From the photos I saw she looked in good nick, but will have a friend in the same area go and have a look tomorrow.

So hold thumbs that the bike is good and my bank helps me out.

Welcome back. Frank changhed it so any accts thatb are inactive for 180 days are auto removed from the server thats why yours was gone.

When Hman said to "hold thumbs" he didn't mean while typing. :p

That is pretty brutal. Considering the amount of information her, the admins are willing to just wipe it out if there is 6 months of inactivity? That is an eye opener.

So, my friend had a look at the bike and the engine sounds fine, has a little bit of noise from the head area. I suspect it's the usual cams floating about that we all know. No smoke, starts quick and easy. Instruments are looking a bit tired.

Nothing serious to put me off, so if the bank lends me the money I'll go get her tomorrow. Already have a lift organized too.

Information/posts in tech forums are not deleted. User accounts that have not been logged into for 180 days are removed.

From what I've seen, the posts still appear on a google search, but have a non-active indicator (ie, 'guest' or name in plain type) on the user's name, so the info is still there to be found.
With the low cost of modern storage, what was the point of saving a few hundred megabytes, I wonder.

So, here I am still without the bike

The bank approved the loan, but due to my cellular provider logging a default with the credit bureau two years ago (while I was in hospital after my crash) and not removing it after I settled the account, they could not release the money.

Got it sorted out on Monday though, so now I will go and get her on Saturday. :)

Great success!

Got on a shuttle bus Saturday to go get the bike and rode her back home. She needs a bit of tlc but I will get her sorted. But first I need to give her a good clean, but it will only happen next week as my engine cleaner is finished.

Problems I've noted:

  • Handle bar slightly bent.
  • Indicators- not flashing, just stays lit when indicating, indicators swapped around, switch left indicates right etc.
  • Light switch -broken, thus only high beam works.
  • Fuel -gauge not working.
  • Speedo - no cable, but instrument seems broken as well (stuck on 60km/h).
  • Front Fender - POS plastic crap, will find something better.
  • Fuel Tank - Dented right side, petcock inop.
  • Seat - Needs refurbishing.
  • Engine - Noise from the top end, needs shims probably. Needs to cam end covers. Side cover "decals" (Suzuki & DOHC) looks really tired

The rest of the bike seems to be in great shape.
Next weekend I'm going to drain the oil, change the oil filter, clean the air filter, check the chain tensioner for operation etc.

So, this weekend I managed to service her and give her a wash. Still have to tend to the other issues.

Went for a ride on Sunday, and it was a lot of fun.

So, the spray painter where I work had a Katana he was struggling with (electrical problem). I rewired the bike for him, payment for my service was painting my bike's tank and side covers.

Not a bad trade! I wish I could find more bartering deals like that around here.

Can't wait to get the top-end rebuilt on my 850 so I can get a few rides in before the weather turns to crap even more.

Sad news time, my beloved bike was stolen last week Wednesday from right in front of my work. No one saw nothing, no security cameras in the vicinity. Of course she wasn't insured because of her age, the only insurers willing to take it on was too expensive to afford. This was my only transport I have....

I don't have money for a new bike but I was generously sponsored a 1100 Katana which needs a lot pf work, but my employer is willing to help me. Expect pics when I get a chance.

Also I'm thinking of having the bike look very mean, matt black with gloss red accents?

Hman, that is sad news. I guess the only hope is it may show up for sale somewhere, if the police can't find it.
The "ugly-beater-won't-get-stolen" is a thought, but having to ride one might be a depressing reminder that the evil scum won't let you have anything decent. and anyways. as soon as it catches their eye, they will be trying to wheel it away. I know, it goes without saying... but Better to get a lock-up for the next one.

Yeah, I won't be parking the next one outside at work. My boss also offered to have it insured under the companies insurance which would make for an affordable premium. I also intend installing a alarm on it for some extra peace of mind.

per black matt and red highlights....homejob, spraybombs etc, painted, just a few thoughts but summing my bs up, I'd do as you did with your first bike-make it your own as you go along because a fast overcoat of badness won't stick to a good bike. Hows that for philosophy? :) It might be more maintenance than it's worth unless you let it go long enough to look like a dirty old barbecue but it's just my theory that follows....
Mat paint has no protection. No clear coat, no wax so it's going to be punished and in a way is not so tough as it looks. ....it is actually shiny paint with fillers in it. Is there a flat clear overcoat you can use? .... On tanks and sidecovers it'll be ok but simple paint jobs can get beaten off on the road and look sh*tty in a short while especially on the front of the engine and forks - however, on rims, it's protected in the shadow of the tire.
I'd stay away from the engine... A lot of so-called spraybomb engine paints don't stick to aluminum very well and anywhere else on aluminum, it's a good idea to use a zinc-chromate primer first too.

if you have to paint headers, barbecue paint works about 6 months and is easy to recoat- it's best feature is you can find it in a can to brush on. It's a mat but is not exactly black- Lately, I've had pretty decent luck with Brake-caliper paint versus engine paints but it is a semigloss and needs a little more care to cure it on the bike. You have to start the bike several times and kind of work the curing process down the pipes. It's still not a powdercoat by anymeans!! and I'm still in testing mode on it.
