    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I'm really starting to loath the previous owner. As some of you may know, I WAS going to attempt to create some of my own air filters, to the same spec as the original air box and filter.

Turns out, I HAVE NO AIR FILTER. I have some mosquito netting balled up and dropped in to the air box. that is out now, but i still don't have the foam filter.

here is where i need help. I ride a 1981 GSX400L. word is that its from the european market, so specific parts on this side of the pond are hard to find.

Does anyone know what kind of filter I need. I'm thinking of using one meant for the gs450 as a lot of my bike's geometry is very simular, and air mass flow is probably pretty close. I was thinking to use a GS400 filter, but the 81s are all 2 valves per cylinder, where mine are 4.

Any thoughts?

If the filter and cage from the GS450 fit in your GSX400 I see no reason why you can't do that. You will need to ensure that it is a perfect fit though, as if not, you'll be looking for more fuel (running lean) once everything is together.
 
I don't think you have to worry about air flow, really. If it fits, it'll work.

Talk to your local dealership, see if he has some GS filtres in stock. See what fits. Failing that, go to a motorbike graveyard and compare what you can find there. I'm sure something will cross over.

If you can't find anything, go pods and learn how to jet your carbs (cuz you'll have to). Jetting is fun! :-D AND you have the added benefit of having no dynojet kit available. No temptation to take the easy way out :-D

Commodus, your'e a sick SOB, but I like you. 8-[ Everyone should experiment with rejetting at least once in their lifetime. Some with masochistic tendancies persist with ongoing projects. But, you do learn a lot!!
 
You can buy sheets of air filter foam from Uni at most auto parts stores (at least in the US) and cut it to size. It's very similar foam to the factory. Once you cut it to the right size, you just oil it up, squeeze out the excess and install. That's what I've used on my 400. Works great.

My 850 came with an old sock for an air filter. Welcome to the club. :)
 
Pods are a possiblility, but I don't really have that kind of coin right now. I was thinking of making some out of Hydraulic filters by adding foam and internal structure, but I'm being very retentive about this. my goal is to do everything right, but for as little as possible, just to see if I can. I'm sure some oily pantyhoes pulled over a frame would work, but thats not the point.
sorry Commodus. Rejetting may be a lot of fun, but I'm not going for the learning experiance with something that is 10% of my net worth.
I gots no bike yards, and the nearest good shop is 3 buses and 1.5 hours away at least.

I may put in a large automotive air filter or a thick, low density foam, and then modify the air intake.

we'll see.
