my bike has an inline fuel filter, and i have been reading that they cause problems. I have the gas tank off and apart right now for painting and i noticed that there is no screen in the tank. do i dare run it without any kind of filter on the fuel system?
thanks

Alot of folks put their faith in the fine screen mesh attached to the petcock and to the float valves in the carbs. After opening up the carbs on the 750T, I'm not so sure this is a good decision, especially if your tank is showing rust. The bottom of the bowls in these carbs contained a good amount of rust particles which had also found their way up into the idle jet and partially plugged the very small hole at the tip of the jet. The particles were small enough to get past the screen on the float valves so I think they were getting past the petcock screen too. I'm not 100% sure that a bike filter would have stopped them (I should have saved them and tried pouring them through a bike filter to test it out).

I think if you decide to use a filter, then you need to make sure that no air bubbles can get trapped in the filter. The filter should be aligned vertically and attached to the carbs with a short hose between #2 and #3. The hose going from the filter to the tank should also be aligned so that no air can get trapped.

If you are missing the screen on your petcock, does that mean that you don't have any reserve? One of the functions of that screen/tube assembly is to allow for a reserve setting. I would try to find a replacement for that assembly and I would definitely run with a filter until I got that screen in there (and probably after too).

No! There is only one other line of defense here. There are small screen filters on the inlet needle seats. You plug those up and your carbs have to come off. Either get a new petcock with a screen and dump the inline filter or just leave the inline. I vote for fixing the petcock screen as it has a larger surface area and would take a lot to completely plug up, versus the smaller inline filter. My thoughts.

fuel filter

fuel filter

Most of my past problems with fuel filters have been related to the abilty of the filter to allow enough fuel to get to the carbs. Suzuki has one that is fairly small that will flow enough for an 1150. Not sure of the part number but it measures approx 1" dia x 1" long with an opening of 1/4". If you want one for a smaller bore bike (650 or less) you can use a filter with a smaller opening. If you are thinking of running without a filter of any type (tank or inline) be sure to wear comfortable shoes for walking as the screens above your needle valves will most certanly clog with rust etc. It would be a good idea to take the time to clean these screens while you're putting in a filter just to be on the safe side.

Ok you wierdos, is nobody going to suggest the correct resolution?

Get rid of the rust, and put the petcock back to stock. Then ditch the inline filter.

Wierdo, huh! Thanks Jethro Bodine. No more free stuff for you! I did suggest this. He never said he had rust in the tank. Just that it was off being painted. So like I said, fix the petcock.

A $5.00 filter can save you removing and having the carbs cleaned. No big deal if you can do ityourself if not 2-$300.00. 5 dollars or 2-300???
I like the $5.00

An inline fuel filter cost me $300.

Whoops! Guess I'm the wierdo!! I saw Dimitris' post and got rust on the brain!

Seriously, if you choose to get an inline fuel filter, try and find one that somehow doesn't have an ID of smaller than 5/16". I had one in a 5/16" line that must have been a 1/4" ID and melted an exhaust cam bearing from fuel starvation at extended full throttle.

lots of ideas

lots of ideas

well, thanks for all the suggestions, i do have a little rust in the tank which i'm going to get rid of while it's off for the rest of this work. the carbs are getting a cleaning. it seems that as long as I get the right sized filter that it wouldn't hurt anything to put it on. any ideas where to get one of the screens for the petcock?
thanks

Bike Bandit may be able to get the screen, possibly even a Suzuki dealer. If not you may need to get another petcock.
