    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Inline fuel filters for 1980 gs550e

Has anyone managed to fit a fuel filter (inline on fuel line ) on
a GS ? 1980 sort of model ?

I attach a picture of the little room available thus i ask how can i do this ?
I have never managed to get perfect fuel lines but i think a 5/16" or 0.75mm fuel filter would do the job.
Where do I get one to fit ? I need a solution !

<the reason I want to do this is a) it saves heartache on the old bikes b) I am on my travels again this year
on this very bike to Croatia and then round Italy and back.>

Because it's gravity fed, guys recommend avoiding car filters. Something for a small engine like a lawn mower is ok. I looked them for them at Home Depot and saw some good examples but I never bought and installed one.
 
I think when these bikes were designed (or at least mine) there was absolutely no way
they considered a fuel line filter access.
All i know if you ever clean a tank then a fuel filter is essential.

I think I will give up trying to solve this as there is no room for one.
Ill go with the internal tank one and hope that does the trick with a clean tank.
 
As you say Jules, there is very little room there to fit any kind of filter. As long as you are happy with the internal state of your tank, you should be fine.
 
There are also filters on the inlet of every carb, so you actually filter your fuel twice before it gets into the bowls.

As mentioned, something for a lawn tractor should work. Not sure what sizes you have available over there, but look for something that has 7mm fittings on it.

The gauze type filters are best for fuel flow, but the paper element ones are best for filtering. I ran a car type paper element filter on my 1150 for years and never had any problems but my brother tried to run one on his KZ1300 and had no end of issues with fuel starvation.

Its a bit of a "try it and see" situation.

I think I will run it as is although have bought those 7mm ones to test.

I know from harsh experience when you have cleaned a tank out chemically from a rust bucket
if you dont use pipe line fuel filters (initially for the first 6 months say) you are in for a world of pain constantly taking the carbs off.

That was on two other bikes but my 550 GS I have never treated the tank and never had an issue.
Just that when you are 1500 miles out on a tour it would kind of give me reassurance.

(Just done the valve clearances etc in readiness for a massive EU tour on it later in summer)

Ill test and report.
