Install 1100gk fairing/full dresser on 80? 1000g.

Hey, all. Bought an 80? gs1000g recently, and I want to make it into a full touring bike. The fairing, side bags, trunk, and the mounting brackets from a gs1100gk fell into my lap.
Is there any guides/videos for installing the GK fairing+dresser?
I have the Haynes and Clymer guides, and they show some exploded diagrams, but no reference on how they are attached and wired to the bike.
Also, I?m aware that the 1000g and 1100gk are different bikes?sorta. I?m not afraid to fab some adapter brackets if the mounting points are different.
Any advice or links from folks with experience on this matter is welcome.
Thanks!

Don?t know how to add my bike to my signature, so help with that is welcome too, but my bikes are:
81? GS850G, 80? GS1000G, 79? Yamaha XS750, 79? Vespa P125

well a side by side frame comparison is a place to start as I doubt anyone has done this.

I'll build on what Cipher started and organize the images a bit.

Sometimes this site has better images and the format is easier to use. https://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki-gs1100gk-1982-z-usa-e03_model15999/partslist/#.YfVtAerMKUn

For cross referencing parts I like this one. Once you have the part number paste it into the yellow search field and it populates a list of other bikes that part was used on. https://alpha-sports.com/

The side by side comparison shows an obvious addition to the rear of the frame. There are slight differences for other odds and ends that are neat to find. If I'm not mistaken there are bolt holes or something on the front as well, but they're hard to see in these drawings. Maybe someone can verify that.

This is the rear bracket assembly. Hopefully this stuff came with the set of GK luggage that fell into your lap. Fabricating these would take quite a bit of effort.

I've seen a 1000G wearing GK bags, but didn't study the mounting. Maybe PM Dogma and ask for some pics of his setup.

Steve is another member with GK bags on a G. His has the trunk as well. He's been away for a while so hetting any info from him will be hard.

As far as adding the bikes to your signature, just go to the settings menu (link at top right corner next to logout) then you'll see on the lower left all sorts of useful options.

The fairing has some interesting mounting points. It doesn't appear to use clamps like the Vetter or other aftermarket fairings. The drawing looks like someone erased part of the mounting tab. These images are facing opposite directions But I think #5 on the lower bolts to where the numbers and 24 and 25 are. Maybe someone could clarify that.

Thanks, all! I do have the fairing brackets and the mounting racks for the trunk and side bags. The exploded diagrams are definitely helpful. I figured it would be a long shot to find anything that shows how everything actually mounts and gets wired to the bike itself. Shouldn?t take much to work it out, though. Not afraid to fab any brackets to make it work.
Thanks again!

I have never worked on a GK, but I do know several who have adapted the saddlebags and/or trunk to either an 850 or 1000.

The rear mount (where the turn signal mounts on your 1000) needs a piece of flat stock that is about 1" by 2 1/2". That will hold up the rear mount for the bags. There is also a strut from the lower front of the bag frame that is supposed to connect to the rear footpeg mount on the GK. A small piece of flat stock can be welded to the subframe just above the footpeg so you can bolt the strut to it.

I have had other bikes with factory-mounted fairings. They had brackets welded to the frame. Other brackets would bolt to them and hold up the fairing. Not sure if the GK works the same way.

The GK has a 41mm fork upper & I believe a wider triple tree than the G. I'm not sure if it was done to stabilise the fairing but it's the only GS that has that fork... even the 1150 only has a 37mm fork upper (although much wider set than the older GS's).

Hope it all works out. Please let us know how it goes. Also if you would snap a few pics of what you're doing then post them for anyone looking to do this in the future. Any custom brackets you make would be really cool to see.

If you have trouble posting pics you can email them to me burque_73@yahoo.com and I'd be glad to get them up here for you. I think there's a minimum number of posts before you can upload pics, unless you use another site to host like imgur, flickr etc.

Good luck with this.

Yeah. It?s not letting me insert photos after I add them to the photo insert deal. I?d appreciate it if you would throw them up for me. I?ll email you some with descriptions.

Chris, I uploaded the pic you sent. It flipped on it's side at first try so I cropped it just a bit and it stayed upright.

With such a small file size the forums software let me upload it, otherwise I'd use my flickr account. This is better for now though if pics are uploaded they will be available in the future. I've had to delete some pics on my flickr photostream to make more room and it removes them from the forum as well.

That's a good looking 1000G. Looking forward to seeing your project progress.

Much appreciated! I’m pretty excited to see where this project goes. Picked up the bike from the PO, and found out he didn’t know how to reassemble the petcock. Fuel traced down to the wiring harness, and caught fire, frying them to a crisp. And that’s how I bought a garaged 1000G for $500!
installed Dyna coils, new wire harness, and battery. Full carb clean and sync. Replaced the filter box and boots. Installed baffles in the empty mufflers. A few other miscellaneous repairs. Running like a champ now!
I’ll update this thread with the Full Touring conversion.
