Hey everybody,

Well i finally got out of Saudi Arabia after 8 months stuck there due to COVID and so i am back to pick up the rebuild of my GS550E.

I spent part of yesterday cleaning the wiring loom in preparation for the install but ... as i didn't strip the bike down and this is my first build i really would be grateful for some guidance - at a basic level. I was hoping that you guys could recommend any pictures or videos of the install either on the forum or elsewhere (YouTube etc).

I am at home now for 4 weeks so would really like to make some progress if i could rather than repeatedly giving the bike deep coats of 'a good staring at'.

Great to be back and hope you are all well.

Perhaps you could provide some photos of what you have, and just how many pieces it is in right now?

Is it down to the frame?

This won't help you with details, but it might give you an idea of what assembly is like.
And, you might find it amusing. ;)

Hey Bob,

Thanks for getting back to me. Of course i forgot that every thread needs a plethora of photos. Let me see if i remember how to do this!

So here is a shot of all the wiring 'stuff' laid out in my workshop GS550E update by Mike Balmer, on Flickr

And again from the other end GS550E update by Mike Balmer, on Flickr

The loom is basically in two large sections - Section is closest in the first picture (above) and Section 2 is here GS550E update by Mike Balmer, on Flickr

I fitted the new chain today, had previously done the new sprockets when home last (March) but the chain riveter tool had not arrived before i went back to Saudi. GS550E update by Mike Balmer, on Flickr

Here are some shots of the rest of the bike and other bits:

And i think the guy i bought it from had bought some extras so there is some duplication which i need to work through, for example there is an new regulator rectifier in the small box at the top of the table GS550E update by Mike Balmer, on Flickr

Bob, forgot to say thanks for posting that video up - thanks mate

Thanks 2bRacing,

Worked out that i had been given two separate wiring looms by the guy i bought the bike from, one for mine and one much newer one which he was going to retrofit to the bike!

Its like the scales have fallen from my eyes!

Thanks for the advice and taking time to reply - appreciated.

Hey guys,

made huge progress with the wiring harness and the rest of the bike over the past 2 weeks, a lot of help from people on this forum of course.

I have a question that will probably cause much laughter, what is the 'ignitor'? i have identified a bunch of wires on the harness that go to the ignitor, i cannot find them on the wiring diagram for the GS550E (my bike) and i cannot find the ignitor. For those that don't know, i bought my bike in a number of plastic boxes and have been rebuilding it without the benefit fo having first stripped it down. Should i have an ignitor and if not should i just blank-off the wires and forget about it?

Any thoughts or advice gratefully received as ever.

A 78 550 will have points, assuming the PO never upgraded them to electronic.

Thanks Dave,

So no ignitor then and i will blank off those wires.
