A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Last year I picked up a GS850G 83 that only started a few times and sat ... mostly due to me having other priorities. Today, Fathers Day, I finally got the time to work out the issue. Seems the clutch contact system in the lever/perch isn't connecting hence it wouldn't start. I have temporarily bypassed this and have it now running great.

I can not seem it find find a replacement cable gizmo for the clutch side of the bars, only the brake light cable gizmo. Are they interchangeable for either side?

Not quite, but they are not really "necessary".

In fact, many of us have intentionally disabled the clutch "safety" switch. :encouragement:

.

I kind of figured that they were not necessary and perhaps that's why I can't seem to find a specific replacement for it. I'll likely leave it as is ... really it is $12 I don't need to spend.

you will want more than the wiring harnes. You will want a different part number thast includes the little spring and u-shaped contact thingy. The u-shaped contact thingy is what typically wears out. THe contact bars on the switch plate wear groves in the u-shaped contact thingy that are so deep that it doesnt contact any more. Maybe can file the surface down so the groves are not so deep.
Or maybe the switch just needs to be adjusted. loosen the screws and slide it forward or back (dont recall).

I think I recall that the only difference between the brake light switch kit and the clutch interlock kit is that the clutch interlock has two connectors, each of different gender, and the brake switch has two of the same. So can use one kit on the other if just cut off one connector and crimp on one of the other gender.
If you work on GS long enough you will come to know that will need a supply of connectors and a crimper.

Naw, dont absolutely need that clutch switch.
Advantage of not having it is that can start the bike with only one hand.
Disadvantage of not having the switch is that if do try to start the bike with one hand and the bike is in gear you are probably going to fall over, and if the bike does start you are probably going to run into something if you dont fall over.

I have adjusted, or repaired, or replaced my clutch switch(es) multiple times since 1982.
