A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello All,

I was curious to know if it is necessary to use a slide hammer to pull the starter clutch assembly from the cracnk shaft :?: It says so in the Clymers, but I wanted to get some more experienced opinions from all of you before I proceed "fat dumb and happy" without one and find myself up the creek without a paddle.

Much appreciated.

Re: is a slide hammer really necessary?

Forget the slide hammer. Get a rotor puller through a local bike shop or online. A slide hammer wont do you any good with a rotor puller anyway and if you have a rotor puller, you have no use for a slide hammer.

Earl
PS............a slide hammer is a great way to destroy a rotor though. :-)

Thanks Earl,

Now the next question.... I have found two styles of rotor pullers so which is best for my application?

This one?

or this one?

Thanks again!

Those appear to be parts of rotor pullers. What you are looking for looks like a huge socket, with an inside thread on the open end of the socket.
At the other end(top) of the socket, there is a threaded hole for a press shaft that turns in to press the rotor off by pushing against the end of the crankshaft while the socket is threaded onto the rotor.
I believe it is the K&L catalog that has the best variety of pullers. Most bike shops have that parts/accessories book.

Earl, thanks for the description I believe I have found what I am looking for.

I have been able to find rotor pullers on the net for the 550, but not the 450. Tomorrow when it is a decent hour I will call the local cycle shops to see how they can help me.

I just want to verify that I have found the correct tool.

Is this it?

Again, THANK YOU

You may have to get them to cross reference your rotors part number to the part numbers of the bikes' rotors that have tools available.

Steve

Yes, those are what you are looking for. There were only a few variations of thread sizes on GS rotors. So while your particular model may not be llisted, you can order one by diameter and thread pitch.
