A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Is it worth it to re-chrome?

Anyone have experience getting parts re-chromed? I would like to pretty some parts up. Airbox covers, headlight ears, fork tubes, fenders, etc. What's the cost? Were you satisfied with the results?

Did you have to do anything to prep the parts first? Did you have to fill in any pitting, remove rust, etc.? If so, how did you prep?

It will cost more than purchasing clean replacement parts.

Thats IF replacements are available. If they are NLA and you need / want them then you do what you gotta do.

With the great abundance of the new colors I would go with powder coating.

And theres that spray on "chrome" thats featured in Jay Lenos Garage series as well...but it isnt real metal chrome either.

anybody done it?

anybody done it?

Thanks for the replies guys, but it would be helpful if someone shared their experiences with real chrome.

I have six 30+ years old bikes....I dont have enough money to rechrome anything. Heard its not cheap.

it is very expensive to have things rechromed. they have to strip the old chrome off before prepping it again. i was quoted ?50 for the 2 small covers under my tach/speedo to be rechromed. haggled with them and got it cheaper but to have say, an exhaust rechromed it would be cheaper to buy a new one. (which you cant, new anyway!)

Or just get it ceramic coated in a "chrome" color.

Here are my pipes (still need to be polished) after ceramic coating. Sorry for the way the picture was taken but I'll get a better close up once I'm done with the rebuild:

Powdercoat or anodise.
'Set it, and forget it'!

(ceramic for the hot stuff)

someone here must have done it

someone here must have done it

I do think I will eventually have the exhaust ceramic coated. As for the parts I mentioned in the first post, only chrome will do for me. Surely someone here has done some of this. I would really like more details other than to say it is expensive. Does anyone know just how expensive?

I get parts chromed occasionally, and that's when I don't have any other options. There are some platers in the UK who will offer a quote based on photos - perhaps there is someone in your part of the world who could do the same?

who do you use mate, is it some place in Cornwall, and are they any good?

I've used Doug Taylor a few times. Prior to that I used Fareham Electroplating, but they went under. Before that, I had mates in the dockyard - ideal! Except for the time they left a set of father-in-law's Triumph bars in the tank overnight. Best chrome ever, but none of the controls would fit.....

I've been looking at SMB Plating, but not contacted them yet. Do you have any experience with them?

Hmmm, I need a grab rail done. I guess I could stop by next time I'm in Launceston.
