A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Is the '81 gs650's oil pan the same as '82s?

Stripped drain plug thread, not sure if I want to spend a ton of time trying to possible unsuccessfully fix it, and I can only find '81 oil pans on ebay. Will this fit? Thanks

You can compare the part numbers from the fiches from this 2 years on sites like partsoutlaw.com. My guess would be yes but I have not looked.

Better, cheaper, quicker, ... go to Auto Zone and get a +1 drain plug. :-k

It is slightly oversize, will cut new threads and you will be DONE. :encouragement:

I offer this suggestion because to remove the drain pan, you will need to remove the exhaust. The exhaust bolts are usually the WORST bolts on the bike to remove because they tend to break. When they break, you will need to take the rest of the engine apart to have the broken bolts removed from the head. Cost will be a couple hundred dollars, if you do it yourself, and will easily occupy an entire weekend.

.

I was looking at it today and it looks like I would be able to take out the oil pan without messing with the exhaust. It look like I can slide it down towards the back of the bike, are you sure that won?t work?

I’m thinking that even if you manage to remove all on the oil pan bolts with the exhaust in the way, and even if you manage to then finagle the pan out of there, you’re still likely going to have to do a lot of gasket scraping off the bottom of the engine, with exhaust in the way. Steve’s right, as usual.

edit to add: unless you have a lift, you’ll be doing all of that on your back, under the bike.
