A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Is this a factory addition or ......

Hey guys, new member here, i posted a hello thread http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?226253-New-Forum-Member-Here

To start i have a decent knowledge of mechanics, and with time can figure out some wiring woes, but when i opened the headlight bucket on my 83 gs850, I found this (see pic) what would be the point of this? is it something that needs to stay?
To reference, the bike came with a hacked on kawasaki windjammer etc, so was it something for that? help me out. :)

I think that could be the Diode . . . . . . . especially if the other wire is green/white.

(Which would be the diode that most people cant find even if they are looking for it.)

Is usally in an insulateive sleeve.
Needs to be insulated so doesn't short to ground. If it does it will not blow fuse, but will just make either the sidestand light and/or the oil pressure light come on.

Could get into long discussion about what this diode is, and what it does....
.... but quick description is that it is there so that oil pressure switch makes the oil pressure light and the sidestand light both come on, but the sidestand makes only the sidestand light come on.

If you were to remove the diode, so it doesnt not short to ground, then the oil pressure swtich will light only the oil pressure light.

If you do not have heat shrink tubing, at least wrap in it a couple layers of black tape.

Thanks for the info, and the post in my other thread as well.

You would have thought they would have put a bit more effort or design into it than that, but it works i guess!

It did have its plastic sleeve, but didnt photograph well with it still on, heck i had to hold it on my hand just so my iphone would focus on the right thing lol.
I will put it back in its sleeve and also use a chunk of marine grade shrink wrap to insure it doesnt slide out.

And thx for the help, sorry if it was another newbie question, but i had no idea what keyword to search for.

Yes, that is the "Diode".

Here is mine. Or was before I changed it.

You can see next to it its sleeve, condom, whatever.

Mine was open on one end and was full of water. Leading to it's failure.

So it should be tested, replaced as necessary, then insulated.
