    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So I just bought this bike and am now in the process of rebuilding the engine and I noticed that the outside of the clutch is gouged pretty badly. Here is a picture of the damage.

As you can see the gouge is pretty bad in the lower left part of the clutch. So I'm wondering what could cause this and do I need to replace the hub? Thanks.

Looks like one of the bolts has come loose some time in the past.
Look for matching gouges in the inside of the case.
Check the torque on all six bolts, maybe even put some Loc-tite on them, put it back together.

Wait. so are you saying that it's alright to leave it the way it is or should I replace it? And yes there are matching gouges in the outside cover. Thanks.
 
I think it'll be okay. As Steve said, looks like a bolt came loose and rattled around in there, sometime in the past.

Just check that they're torqued right and forget about it. The bike was shifting and riding well before the teardown....right ?:)

I have no idea if it was shifting fine or not. I bought the bike in a non-running condition. The PO said everything was fine except that the engine was leaking oil from the base gasket. He was in the process of replacing all of the gaskets before he called it quits. So I guess I'll tighten it up, finish the rebuild and see how it goes. Thanks for all of the help.
 
Those are not the stock bolts so someone changed them at some point...most likely after one came loose.
 
Get the stock bolts, spacers and springs.
I'd use that pressure plate as long as it's not cracked.
 
Thanks for all of the help guys. Other than the gouge the pressure plate is fine so I'll reuse it like suggested. So where do I get stock bolts from? Why do the springs need to be replaced? Thanks.

The springs (like any spring) starts to sag under load after many years under compression. You can replace, or some people shim them with washers. It stops the clutch from rattling and slipping.
 
Try mrcycles.com for replacement bolts. Use a caliper to measure the springs to see if they need replaced. Replace the springs if they measure less than 38.5mm.
