A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

hi, i just bought a 80' GS550L. it was wrecked. i have rrpaired or replaced everything, and it runs great now exept for...

when cruizing at 4500rpm or higher, for and extended peioriod of time, 3-5 mi. the bike suddenly looses power like it is running out of gas. is stop for a while or open the choke up slightly and run at a lower speed it eventualy runs fine again.

i am guessing that the problem is somewere between the tank and the carb. bowls. but i am unfamiliar with these bikes and do not know what all is down there.

i know that someone has probably already answere this question before, but i has unable to find it.

so if you know the answer or can point me to a thread that reveales the answer, please let me know.

thanks a ton

Re: isnt getting enough gas at 4500rpm

Youre running out of gas all right. :-)
First check is to loosen the gas cap and take it for a ride, if it doesnt run out of gas, then the vent in the gas cap is plugged.

If you have an inline fuel filter between the petcock and carbs, remove it and clean it out or replace it, or install a fuel line without the filter to see if it makes any difference.

Next, check the vacuum line between the petcock and carb for cracks, loose connections, etc. (its the smaller diameter of the two lines) You could be losing vacuum.

If still no luck, try switching the petcock to PRIME. Prime is not vacuum activated and is gravity feed, so if the problem is lack of vacuum to operate the petcock, the engine will run normally with the petcock set to prime. There is no off function to prime, so you MUST return the petcock to the run setting when you shut the engine down.

If fuel will not continue to flow on prime either, then its likely there is silt/sludge buildup in the tank that is blocking the filter screen on the petcock. You will need to remove the tank from the bike and then the petcock from the tank to clean that screen.

I'm assuming you actually do have gas in the tank to start with. :-)
