    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1978 GS1000 that my uncle bought new in April '78.

Started this project Thanksgiving weekend 07.

Complete engine overhaul with indexed, trued, welded crank, Wiseco 1085 kit, Powdercoated frame, new aluminum MX bars, re-contoured seat, fresh coat of urethane clear over the original paint.

BTW, It does run goooood.
 
If it runs as good as it looks, you definitely have yourself a winner. \\:D/

Were the pipes discolored before the rebuild, or do you need to fine-tune the jetting? :-s

This bike was done as a tribute to my Uncle who is luckily still alive and who I attribute a lot of who I am today. We spent a lot of time together when I was at an impressionable age.
The pipes were discolored prior to the rebuild when I was sorting the jetting on the RS34's (last summer). They are gold, not much if any blue.
I'm a little rich now. I'd rather start rich and work lean than the other way!

Tell us about the clear coat, professionally done or did you shoot it yourself?
Obviously it didn't attack the original paint?
Both of my GSes could probably benefit from this treatment.

I shot the clear myself. I used Valspar urethane clear with catylist (hardener). I wet sanded the original clear with 600. After the new clear cured for about 2 weeks I color sanded it (1000 grit) and buffed it since I got a little dust in it. The valspar is pretty easy stuff to work with. I used to be a painter so it wasn't a big deal. I think that people without prior painting experience could lay it down without any major problems. Lay it down until it shines with a little orange peel, then stop. It will flow a little before it flashes off. You're better off with a little peel, than runs. I used 3 coats that were thinned very little. You can always color sand and buff provided you get 2-3 good coats.

Is the Valspar completely safe against fuel spills?
Is the 600 fine enough before the clear?

It should be, its an automotive paint.

Normally I'd use 400 before the clear, but I did not want to break through the original clear. 600 is good.
