A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

just got a 1985 GS550E (-ES?) and idle issue

battery voltage is solid before/during/after riding. i took plugs out and they seem in bad shape. ordered a set of new ones and plug boot/seals on top of that since old ones seem to be in a bad way. i kinda said screw it and reset all idle screws to 2.5 turns out today before checking plugs, and bike seemed to run better/longer on that than when i had them "tuned" in... it did still ended up starting to sputter and die after about 10 miles of riding.

tried to get it in garage to tune while it was sputtering, but nothing seemed to fix the issue. fueling is not the issue as fuel is flowing through the inline filter, even when it's throwing its fits. checked the gas cap and petcock and everything fueling related as well, all good.

any other suggestions?

got a compression test tool today and all cylinders fall right around the 1100 kpa mark (normal as per manual = 1000-1400). waiting for the new plugs/boots next week. leave the country for 3 weeks next thursday, hoping the parts get here before then.

replaced plugs/plug boot seals yesterday. rode the bike for a good 18 miles today and it seemed to still be decently happy at the end of the ride. seeing as it's a nice balmy 95 or so here today i'ld say we have success. i did also retune it after a long ride yesterday and i think i set all the screws about 3-3.25 out rather than the 3.5-4.5 they were before so that may have helped as well. it's a bit tougher to warm up and take off the choke now, but who cares if it's running right during the actual riding.

thanks to everyone for all the help. hopefully this'll be my last post in the "issues" portion of the forum haha.
