    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Just letting you guys know, magnets can go bad

I'm on my second stator. one From ebay the other from a respected forum member. Still not putting out enough ac voltage. Any know a good source for magnet assembly?

A 81 gs850 . We've been all over the wiring, two regulators, two stators, I've read the info that was just posted. That why we bought the second stator. At least now we have spares.
 
Yep , they still held a piece of steel pretty good. That's why we got the second stator. Because we figured magnets physically worked so had to be stator. Not sure the poles because first one got thrown out but in each case I purchased a stator for an 81 gs850
 
So I guess I could change the title of the thread because the magnets still work , it just not working properly.
 
Wasnt there a thread on this very subject a few weeks ago
something about a mid year change in numbers of stator poles etc.
 
I'm on my phone and search option doesn't work properly. I'll search it when I get home.

Not sure if it was "mid-year" or not, but most, if not all, of the '79 and older bikes had 12-pole stators, the '80 and newer bikes had 18-pole stators.

Normally, the '81 in question would take an 18, but who knows what one of the previous owners might have done.

Shovelhead, if you have the stator cover off, take a screwdriver (or some other metal piece, if you don't want your screwdriver magnetized) and run it around the inside of the rotor, counting how many times it is attracted. It will jump from one spot to another as you go around, just count the number of times it is pulled to the rotor.

The correct rotor for 18 pole stator has 6 pairs of N /S magnets, The one for 12 pole stator has 4 pairs of N/S magnets. You can use a plain old refrig magnet (one side is N other is S ) to move it around inside of rotor- it will " grab" six times and " repel" six times on the rotor for the 18 pole ststor.

The '78 and '79 GS1000 had 18 pole rotors, not sure about other models..
 
I guess since it's a electrical part that exchange is it if the question. if the rotors are interchangeable it would make sense to get one that matches the two good stator that we already have.
 
That I'm not sure of. The '78 and '79 850 shared a lot in common with the GS1000. I haven't been into the stator yet on my son's '79850G, That bike is still up where we used to live. The 850 evolved from the 750, the stator listed on the Bike Bandit site looks like a 12 pole.

I can tell you for sure my '79 had a 12-pole stator. 'Had' being the operative word. Bin is the best place for that.
 
When did they do away with the kick starter? He has one on his. Maybe he's been telling me the wrong year this whole time!
