Just rescued 2 gs's from going to scrap...

Sorry in advance while I acclimate to yet another new forum.
I am not new to wrenching on bikes... and even have Suzuki experience.
I have had a 2005 ls650 savage for a while that I have torn apart to nuts and bolts and rebuilt to my liking...
I'm looking forward to learning a bit more about the two new projects that have fallen in my lap.

The most complete bike is a 1983 gs550es.
It looks to be all there except the two side plastics that go under the seat.
I may has the small squared looking headlight housing with gauge cluster. No fearing or windscreen.
It looks mostly unmolested... will find out a bit more when I really start eyeballing it.
It has 12,500 miles on the clock... the reason for its current condition was something about fuel.
It will need a minimum of new tires, chain, brakes gone through... carbs cleaned out,boil change...

I paid 40$ u.s. for it.


The other bike is a 98 gs500e.
Rolling chassis. Bottom end of the motor still in the frame. Gauge cluster, tank, wiring harness, coils, battery box, foot and hand controls, both stands, some of the turn signsls.
That is what is there...
It will need a motor, seat, plastics, rear brake rebuild (the front is in great shape surprisingly) gonna need rubber and a chain.

I paid 40$ for it as well...

So you plan on making them roadworthy again? I always liked the 550es. Test rode a new one at a dealership now long gone. Best of luck.

The plans for the 83 are to do a mostly factory restoration with a little added flare here and there.
The 98 ... I dunno yet. It may get frankensteined into something stoopid...

Do you have / need / can easily get titles?

Could be a deal breaker depending on the requirements of your local DMV.

Also, the early 16v 550's were prone to ignitor issues - does it have spark?

Both bikes will need to be titled. I have solid bills of sale for both bikes, and a chance that at least 1 of the titles can be found.
I am not far enough into it to know weather the 83 has spark or not yet. It is in line right behind an 05 yamaha xvs1100 getting a new ticker.
I should have it out of my shop this weekend so I can dig into the 83.
If push comes to shove when I get ready to register a bike... I can do a bonded title.

So the better half and I started tinkering a bit with the 83 to get a clue about what we're working with.
This poor bike must have been run into a muddy lake. Pulled the seat and tank off to find an eighth inch of very fine grit mud caked on every horizontally oriented surface parallel to ground.
Pulled the bone dry vattery, battery box... loosened the clamps for the airbox and pulled it back away from the carbs...

Mud caked in the insides of both carbs.

Pulled the plugs... all 4 were rusty. 3 were wet. 1 smelled like gas.
Pulled the carbs... mud in all the intake ports.

So...

Oversize pistons... yay! May very something with higher compression?

I have atf soaking in all 4 jugs. Doubt it's gonna break loose without a fight.
Just hoping the rotating assembly is ok.
