Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If I changed out my original green fuzzy filter with a K&N filter will I have to open my air/mix screw setting to accomodate for the additional air intake caused by the new filter, has anyone else experienced this?http://

Try it!

Try it!

Stick it on there and see how it runs!!! You can always consider changes from there.

By the way, you've got a very nice looking bike!\\:D/

No difference?

No difference?

Hi Mr. kvgarrison,

I've gone from the foam UNI filter to the K&N filter on my bike without making any adjustments. When one gets dirty, I clean it, put it aside to let it dry, and put on the other one. I haven't noticed any difference. Use a very light spritz of air filter oil. K&N sell a kit with cleaner and oil.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

If it pops a little take out your idle mixture screws a quarter to a half turn out.

Read two different air filter articles last night and both said that K&N filters don't filter that well.:(

http://www.duramax-diesel.com/spicer/index.htm

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest3.htm

Now I'm thinking that stock might not be such a bad way to go...although, the Uni filter (similar to OE on an 850) didn't do so great either.

I've got a K&N in my 850 and it runs well, although seems a smig lean in the low speed circuit (can't compare to stock since my bike did not have a filter in it when I got it). I hit it with a goodly shot of oil to hedge my bet regarding filtering quality.

You need to read those air filter research reports carefully. Notice especially that the Duramax report was conducted using HEAPS of dust until the filters clogged, ie. the tests couldn't be said to be conducted in real world conditions.

The fact is that people all over the planet use K&N -- and in the real world they are a superior product.

That said, I have made my own oiled foam filters and they work fine too, IMO. Not everyone's comfortable with doing this sort of thing; 'horses for courses' as they say. ;-)

Cheers,
Mike.

Don't mean to be argumentative but after reading the tests, I don't exactly consider K&N "superior". The tests clearly show that K&N's are low restriction filters, but they let more dirt though than the typical paper filter. Gauging against the Uni, which is a foam element - similar to stock on many GS bikes, the K&N is similar, not superior.

A fair point -- I probably overstated the case. :|

Bat on!

Paper makes the engine last longer.
K&N lets it run a little better.

Both are good, just different philosophies.

I don't generally worry about it either way.
Don't tend to keep bikes all that long.

The Ford 460 truck engine I got from my dad ten years ago has a big K&N, as part of the Banks conversion he did. The air intake downstream of the K&N has no dust in it that I can feel, so it must be filtering fairly well. This with 75,000 to 100,000 miles since the conversion.
The filter has only been cleaned a few times.

I like the K&Ns but it seems that i also like tearing my engine apart.:?
