A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

OK, thinking about getting pods, 4 into 1 and DJIII for carbs. Question is about the K&N pods. I see 2 kinds listed for my 1980 GS1000E. They are:

RC-0984 OVAL CLAMP-ON GS1000/1100 80-83 (ex. E)

and

RC-2344 ROUND TAPERED CLAMP-ON GS1000/1100 80-83 (ex.E)

taken from http://www.motorcycleproshop.com/acc/k&n/suzuki.asp

Which ones are best/will fit?

I believe the ovals will fit easier if space is an issue. The cone shaped are a little longer. I have chrome ovals on my '79 1000. Because they're oval and the opening is offset, you can rotate the inner two filters "up" and the outer two "down". Looks to me like the inner two can then breath better than having all four in a straight row. Just my opinion.

The oval straight is what I have... they provide a metric ton of more area than necessary for drawing air into your machine... They look nice though... Reading the question... the round tapered would probably work best.

Ovals it is, thanks for the input gentlemen. This is a winter project. I've been bitten by the "I need a little more power.....I mean.... WANT a little more power" bug. Not that the 1K is slow (even 2 up it screams just fine), just that....well.....I WANT more power. I was originally going to keep it stock but well....now I'm repeating myself.

Pods, jets, V&H 4 into 1 should be good for what......10 more hp? Maybe 15? or that unreasonable. Think stock I have around 90.

Your mods will probably be good for around 12+ HP, if jetted right.
I suggest a DJ jet kit or other jet kit of your choice. I suppose you know how fun re-jetting can be. We'll help, but do your homework and ask questions in advance.
Don't forget the basics either. The re-jet will go easier if you make sure everything else is correct. Compression, valve clearances, ignition timing/spark quality/clean connections, clean carbs, good o-rings in them and any manifold o-rings, vacuum synched carbs (got a vacuum tool?)etc.

Thanks Keith for the advice. Yeah, carbs are synched and completely cleaned and rebuilt to 100% stock specs as of 2 years ago (with a lot of help from GS carb technitian "first timer" so I'll be enslaving......requesting his assistance again plus he's got mercury sticks). I need to do my shims first (overdue) before I dig into the project. The boots seem to be good but I'll test for leaks again. Perhaps buy new ones. Carbs have all new gaskets/rings and everything when I rebuilt them. I'll need to check compression (never have) but the bike runs awesome and doesn't hickup or lag anywhere in the power band. Runs really strong. Got a set of Accel coils on there. I also have a brand new Dyna III waiting to go on. I'll need to buy a box of fresh plugs for the plug reads and testing. I will get the Dynojet Stage 3/III kit.

Any recommended settings off the bat with the DJIII kit? I'm in Chicago so I'm at sea level....I think. :?

5 to 7 HP is a more realistic number to expect but if you get close to 10 then be very happy :)

Sounds like you have the right plans. DJ Stage III jet kit for sure.

What better reason could you ask for?

On both my Hurricane and GS the base settings in the Dynojet kit were pretty close. I ended up raising the needles on both bikes several steps. Other than that it wasn't too bad.

Thanks,
Joe

You're at 700 feet at the lakeshore, and as much as 900 feet out in naperville. IIRC *grins* The bottom of lake michigan is 200' below sea level.

And I have the dynojet kit on my 6/550. It's close. but feels a little lean up top, and it's rich otherwise. It's all within the range of the kits adjustment. The dynojet kits are supposed to be "close ballpark" And to give you enough room to tune things right.
