    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have a 1982 Katana 1000 that I need a starter clutch for. The problem being that I bought one used from a salvage yard and it was the wrong one. They asked me to send in mine to match it up and I did. They couldn't match it and months later they never returned mine. I bought another one from a different salvage yard and even ordered a new one from Bike Bandit and they were both wrong as well. Did they produce these bikes with two different starter clutches?

The starter clutches that I have received are very thin with a round hole and fit on the round end of the crankshaft. Mine was thick, had a tapered hole and fit on the tapered end of the crankshaft and was held on by a large nut and washer. I know it's stock the bike has less than 6,000 miles on it and nothing has been changed other than the carbs, throttle and exhaust.

I might have to pull the cover from my GS1100E to see if it uses the same one. I would apreciate help from anyone that knows what the heck is going on here. I'd post pics but I don't have my starter clutch any longer.
 
What it sounds like you have done is to send the original starter clutch AND stator rotor away, the starter gear and clutch bolts to the rear of the stator rotor. BTW yes there are different sizes in both the starter clutch and the stator rotor. Being as yours is an 82 it should have a 31mm "flat" shoulder behind the taper; your taper will be 1 in 5 BTW.

As usual your information proves invaluable. Yes, that looks like exactly what I did wrong. I looked at the unit as being one piece apparently and now I've got to get a rotor. Hopefully the same salvage yard that had the last one will have the rotor. I'll have to pay shipping all over again but lesson learned and at least they only charged me $53.00 for the starter clutch. ~Gene
 
On the SD (katana) versions suzuki changed the starter clutch and the rotor so the centre thread is a different size from th earlier E versions.
The copper 'shim' between the starter clutch and rotor will also be a different so make sure they send you the shim....

Thanks for the info. I'm glad to know that. I have a rotor on the way and I'm really hoping to get the bike back together and on the road early next week. ~Gene
