Katana Wheel/Front end upgrade for a 85GS550ESF

Looked like Lee550es had the Kat wheel on his with the stock swingarm. My '83 750 has the same swingarm as the 700's I would think shipping wouldn't be much more than $10 or $12 via USPS. 140/70 radial is the biggest you would want on a 3.5, I changed to the 4.5 to go up to a 160/60.

how do you want payment.......will paypal work? I can send you $50 paypal to cover paypal's fees and to be sure there is enough money for shipping. will this suffice?

Paul

what size tire is currently on the wheel?

Here is a pic of a Katana 750 fork on my 83 550,
GS11RF.JPG

This was a straight bolt on, I also modded the original front fender to mount to the fork brace of the new forks.

which rear swingarm are you using and how wide is that rear tire?

The swingarm is also from the Katana. It is wider than the original frame at the pivot. This bike has a GSXR1100 engine in it and the frame was widened to suit. This is running a Yamaha R1 6" wide rear rim, Not exactly a simple bolt in.

definately not what I'm after......but sure looks COOL:cool:

I'll go with the GS700 swingarm swap, and the 88 Katana 750 front/rear swap for now.....sounds like almost a direct bolt-on. I think I read somewhere about milling the rear wheel for the sprocket to align with the drive sprocket.......is this correct? Or will this 3.5 inch Katana rear simply bolt on using my spacers?

For the 3.5 rear wheel the GS500 would be a similar chainline. It's sprocket mount may be the right choice with the later style wheel. I Have been looking into this to install a 4.5 wheel on another GS550. I just have not done it yet.

what size tire is currently on the wheel?

A 140/70/17 D205 Sportmax with about a 1/4 of it's tread left. The wheel itself is bare aluminum (no paint) with the edges polished. There were raised letters that were cast into one of the spokes that were ground off smooth. I stipped the black paint that was on it off to polish the wheels center section but never got that far with it. I guess a paypal deal would be okay.

I looked up part numbers and found that the caliper mount for your bike and the 600 Kat is the same number so your stock 550 caliper will work with the Kat rotor.

I guess complete got misinterpreted. I only meant upper and lower triples with bar mounts on the top triple, that's why I said complete with those items. I have a pair of rotors but one is warped. You would need calipers, wheel, one rotor, speedo drive, axle, speedo cable, caliper moutning bolts, rotor bolts, and headlight brackets.

I'll hold for now on the front end until I think I can find the other parts and search locally......thanks for the offer.

Paul

PM inbound on the rear wheel!

Do you have a pic of this bike complete? I see no exhaust..... do you have some side shots and rear shots? I'd like some close-ups of the front end if you could do that too for me. Thanks,

Paul

I was thinking that photos of where it mounts to the frame collar would help me. I know everyone says its a straight bolt on....but what do I have to modify to keep my guage cluster?

If I recall I have the gauges mounted, I will go out and look in a short bit. The front body is on so it might be tough to get good shots of it.

I am back,
The forks are a direct swap as far as the stem bearings. As I recall the used forks I bought came with the lower tapered bearing, same one my 83 GS had so I cleaned it up and just swapped the forks reusing the original upper tapered bearing.
The instrument bracket was cut apart and welded to suit the new mounting on the upper tree.
Here is a pic shot from up under the fairing.

And a shot from the side,

I do not recall details about the ignition switch, I recall fiddling with switches years ago but no details that I recall.

You're awesome.......thanks! These are exactly what i was looking for. Thanks for all the help so far!

Paul
