Koffs GS750 Build

Small update, bike now runs, but fuel/air is not right cause i have to have full choke on for it to start. It dies if i take choke off. Still, at least I know she runs. Going to take carbs to have them properly tuned I think.

Check your float heights, if that's not the problem you still have crap in the carbs. It should still run (badly) even if the mixture and sync is not good.

Glad you got her to run! But yes, something not right... all passages clear?

I simmered mine in Yamalube carb cleaner, let cool, sprayed with a hose to get the crap out, blew through every orifice with the compressor, sprayed carby cleaner through again, blew through with the compressor again.

I had all jets, floats, float valves, etc. removed also.

Good stuff on the Acewell, keen to see how that goes. I don't have budget for one yet, hopefully after the 15th of the month (payday).

OK, small update, bought a few goodies online and awaiting them to be delivered.

Clubman bars, headlight mounts, bar end mirrors, new horn, carbtune, colourtune, acewell speedo/tacho, acewell speedo cable, full engine and carb hexbolt kit to replace all the stripped and dodgy screws, carb rebuilt kit with proper gaskets as I think one of the gaskets i made was preventing the floats from working correctly, found that they were rubbing when i opened the carbs. (well on one of the carbs). k&n air pods, current pods and rubbers are useless, mig welder (to help me fabricate my brat style seat pan, mounts and gauge brackets).

Now im also looking for rear shocks, want something that is a little higher than standard, fork seals, new spokes for the wheels, front break pads, new brake lines all around, new front master cylinder and grips, rebuild kit for rear master cylinder, new header pipes as two of mine are hit so badly they only have half the normal width.

Possibles purchases are new front and rear sprockets and chain, exhausts (if I cant clean current ones nicely enough)

OK I think thats it for now. if anyone has a good place where i could find some of the above mentioned items that would be great. HEHE

once i mock everything up im gonna tear it down and sand and clean and strip for a full respray.

Most of the stuff I ordered arrived just after I wrote above post.

Mounted the headlight, bars and speedo to see how it all looks. love the bars and headlight, the stock speedo moutning bracket mounts it too high for my liking so will fabricate something that makes it sit lower, just above the headlight.

Has anyone put these on their 750 ? http://www.oldbikebarn.com/Keihin-31mm-CR-Roundslide-Carb-Assy-GS750-2-Valve?sc=12&category=73707

I;m thinking of getting them. Heard that the CR carbs are a lot better to the VM ones. Any suggestions/ideas ? Waste of money ?

Cheers

Hey Koff - nice work so far. You have a great platform for what you want there. Great lines in the frame and tank. I'm in Perth and doing an '82 GS1100G - was going to mention that Modern Motorcycle Co in Collingwood might be worth a try. I've never been there but have bought a few bits from them via ebay. I have a tacho and speedo from them and they look great. I got the mini-speedo with the idiot lights and an LED backlit white face and the tacho to match. They both work on my Suzuki, although I just sent the tach back for replacement today because it decided to reset itself to start at 1000rpm instead of zero. Love the speedo and it works really well with the Suzuki. Looks a lot more "classic" than the Acewell IMHO.

Another place I get parts from is http://www.dimecitycycles.com/ They have some great stuff. I got my natural rubber grips from there and more than anything they are the things that people ask "where did you get those?"

The main thing I have gotten from the folks here is the importance of setting up the carbs and airbox just right. It took me many attempts to get my bike running and in the end when it did fire up I was still unsure of why it decided to run. But it sure did take a lot of carb fettling.

Have you seen http://www.bikeexif.com/ ? Some incredible inspiration there.

Thanks JimmyR,

My headlight was bought from MMC. Visited the shop, Will probably be getting my tail light and indicators from there.

Will check out dimecity for grips. There are a few other bits on that site that i wouldnt mind having. Need to sort out my brakes as well as currentlly both the rear and front master cylunders are gone, just noticed that both have cracks in them as well as the brake lines so looks like th ewhole braking system will need an overhaul.

I actually like having the all in one unit that the Acewell is. yes I like the fact that MMC has the original nostalgia looking speedo and tacho but i wanted both in the one unit so Acewell it is. As I said, I dont like the way it sits atm, will be making it more central and lower between the bar mounts.

If I can get the current carbs working the way I want them I'll stick with them but have had them off the bike now at least 5 times and it does feel like im re-checking the same things, I know that 5 might not be that high a number but I thought the bike would at least run on its own now even if the idle is bad, still having trouble getting it to idle, I pretty much have to hold my arm up agaisnt the carb intakes to get it to start. Between this and the carbs spitting fuel at me via those intakes its a little frustrating. still, ill get there.

My air pods feel shot as they keep falling off due to the rubber mounts for them being perished, I measured the carb intakes and they are around 42.7mm is that correct, do i get the 43mm air pods, thinking of buying the k&n ones, would I need to then change the jets for the carbs if i use those ?

Thanks all.

One quick question for all, I want to repaint the engine silver but unsure how to do it. im not ready to do it yet but am just wandering if anyone has any ideas. I'll be taking the engine out of the frame but dont really want to take it all apart at this stage. If anyone has a good thread on how to do this, please link. had a look but most people take the engine apart and I'm not sure i have the skill to be able to put it all together again. Thanks

Originally I wanted to pull my engine apart to get it blasted. But overwhelming consensus from all the experts was to leave it alone unless I needed to change pistons or rings, etc. Ok to pull off the valve cover but expensive once you get to the cylinders.

As you are no doubt aware, running pods means radically altering your jetting. Any pods will result in vastly increased airflow and going from a cheap pod to a K+N might need some rejetting but nowhere near as radical a change as from airbox to pods. It sounds like your carbs aren't tuned for pods. Trying to start with no filter at all can be pretty hard!

What I have done with my GS1100 is set the carbs up with the airbox and I will leave those carbs alone. I do want to run pods though so have ordered some Mikuni RS36 carbs which are designed to run with pods. Not cheap but so much easier! This way if I get any grief for running pods I can simply bolt on the CV carbs and airbox.

Funny that you got the lighting from MMC - I got my headlight, tail light and indicators from there! They have some great stuff.

Hey Koff, I did this with my motor. It's not that hard, just time consuming with the prep. I am pleased with the results though.

Just sort through my build thread in my signature.

That engine is looking great. Would love mine to come up like that. Well done.

In regards to the pods, would people know which jets i would need to run the k&n ones. or where i could find the correct carbs ? bike was bought with current carbs and pods on it, would prefer not to use airbox on it as I lvoe the pods and how they look. Cheers, gotta read the thread on how to paint an engine like that now. Thanks Good Times.

Nah I have no idea which jets to use sorry. A lot of guys are saying just use the Dynajet kit but I am wary of that because you have to drill out some holes in the carbs, so no going back there. It's not so hard to find out what the original carbs were (if that's what you mean by "right" carbs) by looking in a manual. Manuals can be downloaded from Bike Cliff's site I believe - I bought one on ebay. The manuals also state what the original jets and needles used were.

I want to keep my carbs stock because I finally got them running well with the airbox. That's why I am getting some Mikuni RS36s, because they are supposedly easy to set up with pods as that's what they were designed for. It could be that RS34s would work on your bike. Dynoman Performance can tell you. http://www.dynoman.net/index.html

Of all the pods out there the K+Ns are definitely the ones to use.

(Edit - just checked - it appears that yes RS34s should fit your bike: http://www.dynoman.net/carb/mikuniRS2.html )
