A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

LEAKING AROUND OIL FILTER AND COVER

I CHANGED THE OIL IN MY 1980 GS 1000 TODAY AND SCREWED UP BAD.I PUT THE FILTER IN, PUT THE 3 10MM ACORN NUTS BACK OVER THE 3 STUDS, AND IT LEAKED LIKE A SIEVE. I TIGHTENED THE NUTS TOO MUCH. NOW THE ONE AT ABOUT THE 6 OCLOCL POSITION TURNS EASILY BY HAND SO I PROBABLY STRIPPED THE STUD OUT COMPLETELY. I FIGURE I HAVE THESE OPTIONS:
1. GET A NEW MOTOR
2. UNSCREW THE OLD STUD AND TAP AND PUT IN A LARGER ONE WHICH PROBABLY WONT FIT THROUGH THE COVER HOLE, THEREBY LEAVING ME SCREWED.
3. FIGURE OUT SOME WAY TO ADAPT A SCREWON FILTER.(DOES THE OLD FILTER SCREW ON A COUPLE TURNS OR NOT?)
4.BE AT THE MERCY OF SOME REPAIR SHOP
5. BEG FOR HELP HERE.

If there is room for the next size stud, that is what I would go for. If there isn't enough meat left around the holes then I would use a helicoil. Ray

USE a heli coil & it will work fine, make sure to install it with a dab of perminate locktite. Make sure you have installed the washers under the acorn nuts. With some of the aftermarket filters the O ring may leak ?? Take the cover & sand it lightly with some wet&dry on a FLAT surface You will be all set

For temp repair Just use some JB weld

You should be able to remove the stud and screw in another one. Maybe use some thread lock if it's a little loose. If it breaks off trying to get it out, here's a thread with some ideas. http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/viewtopic.php?t=6455 I like the suggestion from Earl who suggests making a jig that will allow you to drill out the broken stud accurately. As long as you drill right in the center and don't drill the hole too big, you should be able to heli-coil it and be good as new.

Good luck...

Get a torque wrench calibrated in inch-pounds and use it everytime you tighten a bolt. I never tighten anything on these old bikes without it, especially going into aluminum.

THANKS GUYS!

THANKS GUYS!

THATS THE INFO I NEEDED.DIDNT KNOW HELICOILS CAME THAT SMALL.I THINK I WILL BE OK NOW WITH THIS ADVICE.THANKS AGAIN VERY MUCH.WHAT A FORUM!!!

and make sure that dratted o-ring is seated and stuck, I have used a dab of grease to hold it in place while you seat the nuts.

I blew a whole new oil change all over my sidewalk for having it slip just that little bit. then it blew under pressure
