A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Leaking fuel tank

Oh man, got the GS400 running really well and I've been test riding it the past few days doing adjustments and fine tuning. Decided to fill up the tank this arvo, pulled out of the petrol station and fuel was leaking from the tank. I pulled over and it looked like fuel was coming out from behind the badge. Here:

I used a wire brush to clean the paint back a little to find some corrosion but nothing jumped out at me. Closer inspection doesn't give me any huge insight but perhaps you guys know more? Does that strip the badge screws to come out?

Any advice on how to repair, cheap or otherwise?

The bad news is that your tank is likely rusty inside and has rusted thru to the strip under the badge

You should check the inside, clean and line it as needed, POR 15 would be the best liner for that

The strip does not come off the tank

Current issue of Motorcycle Classics magazine has an article about sealing a leaking tank without messing up the paint.

Someone probably used a longer screw for the emblem, the screw punctures the tank. There's not much space behind there.

Have seen this several times.

Line the tank with the POR15 tank kit, it will be fine.

Agree on lining the tank. Just do some research first. There are a ton of threads in the archives on this subject, with lots of tips and suggestions on how to do the job properly. Key thing is to fully derust the tank before lining. The instructions for the sealer kit are vague on this detail, and even allude that it's not critical, but don't believe it. Rust is like a cancer and must be removed if you want a lasting repair.

I agree with Tkent on this. The PO Of my gs1100 used rivets to hold the emblems on so my tank has a slight leak on the same side as yours. I will be using some POR15 soon.
