    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Left side Hot....Right side not....why?....I dunno....

I am most sure this is a carb related problem, but maybe not. When I first start up the bike and let it warm up I have noticed that the left two exhaust pipes and the left half of the motor get hot enough that you cannot hold your hand on them (like they should), but the right two pipes and right side of the motor do not. I can sit and hold my hand right on the pipes next to the engine and not get burned (their warm, but not hot like the left side). After it has been running awhile the right side will finally warm up like the left but still not as hot as the left.

Plugs are not getting burned up or soaked, they look just fine on all four cyclinders. So what could be causing this? If this a carb related issue or could this be an issue with the rubber boots between the carbs and intake leaking and sucking in too much air on the right side keeping it cooler?

This is an 82 GS850GL.

I predict that at idle speed, the pipes on cylinders 3 and 4 stay lukewarm and get hotter only when you ride the bike and the engine is in normal operating rpm's. I expect the bike also idles rough and is hard to start and keep running without choke. :-) SO....... your idle range is not working properly on the carbs on number 3 and 4 cylinders. There are two probabilities. The idle passageways are clogged and not allowing fuel through. OR... the idle mixtures on those two cylinders are so lean that combustion cannot normally occur. I am guessing that an 81 850 has CV carbs and the only adjustment you have is the airscrew. The setting for it should be within running range with the screw about 2 turns out. (not perfect but usable) I think by far the most likely cause of your problem is leaking induction tubes. If the induction tubes between the carbs and cylinder head are flanged and held to the cylinder head with two machine screws, there is a groove in the mating surface for an "O" ring to fit. These rings dry out, crack and leak with age. Your symptoms match perfectly with the result of cracked induction "O" rings. Get Suzuki parts (about $1.50 per "O" ring) Dont use just any rubber "O" ring. They will self destruct in no time flat.

Actually, this is incorrect. The bike starts up just fine and after it warms up I can shut the choke all the way off and it still idles just fine. every so often though it does backfire back through the carbs into the air filter box.

I figued this would be a problem however, would these go bad just by sitting for 5 years? Cause the bike only has 10,000 miles on it and I can't belive these would go bad in such a short time. I have bought new rubber boots for between the carbs and air filter box, just haven't put them on yet. I was going to buy the front ones too but my dealership wanted $25.00 each and I did not have enough money. If I do get the new intake boots, would they come with the new O-Rings you are talking about?

The backfire through the intake proves what Earl is saying. The O-rings are a separate purchase, and are a couple bucks at most from teh Suzi dealer. And Yes, they can go bad in 5 years. :twisted:

Its unlikely you need the $25 boots. When you take yours off, look through them with a flashlight. I would be surprised if you see any cracks inside.
I think all you need is the four "O" rings . (total cost about $6)

I'll get them anyhow. The outsides have small cracks in them. May not be all the way through, but I'll have to get them sooner or later anyhow.
 
yeah, if theyre already showing external cracks, its just a matter of time.
