Looking for a Jet kit

mvalenti

Forum Mentor
looking for a jet kit (complete with needles) for a 1979 GS850 (mikuni vm26 Carbs) no luck on dynojets website starts at 1980... another wbsite listed a kit that fit 78 thru 83??? wow a kit to fit both vm's and cv carbs?

There isn't a jet kit. It's a do it yourself type thing. Fortunately it's easy to do.

There is no cross-carb type kit. Everything is completely different.
List the mods (pods/pipe) and I am sure someone can provide some suggestions.
TheCafeKid just came back and he has experience with these carbs.

What i meant by kit was what dynojet kits are a few mains, needles, shims, etc.. All in one. I think the issue i have is my needles, they are stock. I have custom exhaust, chopped but baffles installed. Increased flow from a custom intake also.

Thanks all

We understand. The DynoJet kits are for CV carbs. Your bike originally came with them, but according to your signature you now have VM carbs. They are different than the CV carbs. They tune differently than CV carbs, and IIRC, the needles are adjustable. What you need to determine is what jets to use. I suggest you send a PM to TheCafeKid, he will probably be the best to give you advice on a hybrid such as you have.

Is there something on BassCliff's site that will help him tune it? I don't even know what jets a VM carb would have except a main jet, and I thought you tuned the VM carbs from the bottom up instead of the top down like a CV carb.

Wait, I am confused. Your initial question said a 79 850G, but your sig says an 80 850G with VM carbs. Which is it?

according to alphasports fiche, a 79 gs850 comes with VM's as stock (?) with a 102.5 main jet.
so surely the GS1000 kit will fit, especially the needles, you may have to buy another size mains, as the 1000 has 95's but it may work fine with his exhaust and intake arrangement

Were there not different sizes of VM carbs? The 79 probably came with VMs, but it was a one year model.

he says he has 26's same as the 1000

Both 26s, but there are different needles between the 1000 and the 750/850. The stock needles work OK, just need to raise them a little and go with bigger mains.

Indeed...

Pods and pipe? Try 115, maybe 117.5. Stock pilot jets to start, but it's possible you may need a 17.5. Try the stock ones first though. It's amazing how much a bump of one size in the pilots can take a crap on your fuel mileage.
Move the needle clip down one step toward the point. You may need to move it two, or even shim it so that it's in between to dial it in just perfect for the pilot-needle transition.

Pilot fuel and pilot air screws leave at stock, then lean out or richen the pilot mix using the air screw ONLY. (Fuel screw is very touchy, and you could end up chasing your tail by messing with that..)
Stock float height.

Give it a shot ;) report back.

Thanks all. I know this whole pods/pipe and jet stuff has been beaten to death... Been reading alot and thought that my issue had been with the needles... (looking for a fast fix I've finally admitted...admitting is half the battle right?) I'm going to try the different combinations of needle placement and jet sizes and get this running the best I can. Will post results.

Don't worry, mvalenti, lots of us run pods with a pipe and the bike runs just fine. You just have to take your time, be patient, and the end result will be dandy.

Got this response. Confirmed...

We do not offer any products that will work for your application.

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Thank You!

Well im putting a spreadsheet together to lay out all the possible settings in hopes to record the findings and hope get me to the sweet spot. Ill post of course.. Kind of approaching it in a "design of experiments" sort of way.

In post #4 I suggested that you listen to TCK. He has experience in this matter.
In post #15, he gave you some suggestions. I would start there. He knows of what he speaks.

First, it seems as if my last post came off different in what i had intendd. so ill clarify. Post 4 confirmed what i questioned originally no cross thpe kits (vm &cv). But i was looking for a vm kit. I had sent an email to dynojet before coming on the forum and was just posting the response. I will certainly be following post 15 and with the different arrangements of clips and shims, jet sizes and throttle position i feel keeping it organized makes sense. Add to the spreadsheet results from plug chops i think it will really help me Nd others understand whats going on.
