    A note to new registrants...
All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Looking for an experience mentor : 1981 GS550T Cafe Racer Build

CafeRookie

Forum Apprentice
Hey everyone! In short, I'm looking for an experienced mentor who would be willing to be a resource for me as I rebuild an 81' GS550T in cafe racer style. None of my friends or family members work on motorcycles, so I'm struggling to find people to ask questions and run my ideas by. Wondering if anyone on here would be willing to be a sounding board for me. That's the short of it. Below is the long version!

A year and a half ago my priorities changed. I was wasting my free time not doing anything productive - I knew that needed to change. I sold a video games system and bought a motorcycle....but not just any motorcycle. A motorcycle that was completely disassembled. The previous owner was going to fully restore it and make it into a cafe racer but realized how much time/energy it would take and wanted to cut their losses. It's the perfect bike for me. I bought it for the purpose of learning how to put a motorcycle completely back together. I have experience working on cars, but no previous experience on motorcycles.
At first, figuring out where every bolt, washer, the part had to go was overwhelming, but now it's almost like I've learned the 'GS language'. The mechanics of the GS frame, parts, and components make a lot more sense to me, but that's not to say I don't have any questions. I still have a lot of questions! Every question that I find an answer to helps me build a mental, and physical, framework of how everything goes together. Sometimes the information I'm looking for is difficult to find sifting through the internet since my questions are pretty specific, but the internet has a lot of general information on it. I'm hoping to find someone I can message or call to discuss carburetor questions (running pods) and electrical questions.

Please comment or send me a direct message if you would be willing to help me out! I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Mike

Start a Project thread, and find a photo hosting site to use since the forum photo system sucks.

As you go along, post all your questions. Lots of people here will help answer your questions. Just remember to try to find the answer yourself by using the search function here. One trick is to use titles only, and search for keywords. Just about every possible GS related question has already been answered, and the info is just waiting for you to find.
