    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Looking for assistance from someone with a 1983 GS 450

I have a 1983 gs 450 ignitor that was gotten in mistake due to the thought that it was a 1982. I don't have the number right on me, but i can get it if needed.

What I need is the order of the wires, or a picture of the wires that connect the harness to the ignitor.

If the HEI setup we are trying does not work, i want to see if we can rig up the 83 ignitor.
 
If the advance curve is built in to both igniters it will work.
If the plugs don't match the colors should.
 
yeah, the plugs don't match, and i have the wiring diagrams for both, i just want to make sure which color wire goes to which pin.
 
If the ignitor you have is for the 83, then you'll need to disable the mechanical advance on your crankshaft as the 83 onwards uses electronic advance, so it's not quite a direct swap. I'm not sure if the advance curve will be the same or not, but on the '82's the timing is 10 degrees BTDC below 1650 RPM and 40 degrees BTDC above 3500 RPM.

According to what I see in the Clymer, the colours of the wiring match all the way up to about '86.

I'll be testing my HEI setup on Saturday to see if it works or not, so keep an eye on my ignitor thread in my sig. for more details then if you like.
 
The timing should be the same for both bikes.
Before binding up the mechanical advance see if you can get a fixed one here or off eBay.
There is a chance the Ignitor isn't good.
 
The colors are the same, but is the pin-out diagram the same too?
 
Wire it directly and see if it runs. Do not hit the thottle so the mechanical advance kicks in or you will be running double the advance.
Cut the plugs so you can solder them back in.
 
Not a 450 owner and I really have no idea but:

You might want to check a manual for the valid resistance ranges for the signal generator. On the 550s the 80-82 mechanical advance EI models had much lower impedance than the 83-86 electronic advance models. If the same is true of the 450s there's a chance the 82 sig gen won't be able to make it fire.
 
According to the Clymer, while the 83 and onwards has electronic advance, it says the tests are the same, which means the pickup coils should be the same resistance.

The part numbers don't match and they look physically different going by the fiche, but that doesn't mean they're different electrically...
