    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Loose Wire on 79 GS1000L is it supposed to be?

I am awaiting manuals and should be receiving my Pingle today, so I have this wire-small red wire that connects to the positive battery terminal, it travels up the frame of the bike towards the handle bars and has a connectoer on the end and electrical tape...it is supposed to be connected to something?
Also nothing on the right side lights up. The turn signals, or the right gauge cluster. The brake light does not come on when the front brake is depressed but does come on when the rear is...this little wire have anything to do with that. I checked the fuses and all appear to be intact.

I am new at this so thanks for all the patience.

I don't have any diagrams if front of me but I'm pretty sure
this was something the previous owner added, maybe for a relay
or an accessory.
It has nothing to do with your lights not working, they would be switched
power not direct from the battery.

Ok that is good to know. Thanks for the insight. I know nothing at all about wiring and want to wait to have a book in front of me before I do anything else unless someone knows what may cause this.
 
your mysterious red wire was probably for the previous owners goodtime radio or cb. :-k
 
Have you checked the fornt brake wires, perhaps this is supposed to be the hot wire that connects to the front brake to clost the circuit when the lever is pulled. If so this would explain why you have a wire with no connection and an electrical component that doesnt work. Simply look for the wires coming from the front brake handle and trace the wires to where they connect. If they do get connected then the extra wire is obviously for some aftermarket device that is no longer there as a previous reply suggests. And in that case you will need a front brake rebuild kit which costs about 15 US and considering the age of the bikes and the fact that it is a mechanical switch it is about due. Hope I could help.
 
There would be no standard unswitched power wires. It would have been for an accessory that needed to be run while the bike was off. Make sure the wire does not short out if it is unfused.
 
Well...the right turn signal just started working....only thing not working now is the fuel gauge...I am hoping the float just nneds to float loose...

Marine: I managed to jam the float on my 400 once after removing the tank. All I had to do was take the tank off again and flip it over after giving it a good shake.

Marine I have an L model, check under the tank at the rear for a pair of wires with bullet connectors think they are black with yellow stripe and yellow with a green stripe. they send info from your sensor in the tank to the gauge. Check all your fuses and the wires connected to them for corrosion and make sure all connectors even the ones in the headlight are plugged together and intact. the activation switch for your front brake should trace to the inside of your headlight shell and plug into the harness in there. If you can wait till Wednesday when I get home from work I can email you a picture of the wiring diagram from my Clymers manual.
