    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

lost Brake part

Gentlemen,

I took the pins out that hold the rear brake pads on my '79 GS850 and the 2 spring things went flying. I found 1 but not the other yet. These are the things that hook around the pad and shim and go under the pins. I have it back together without the missing spring. How bad is that? What do those things do?

Those springs apply a bit of tension to the pads to keep them from rattling around.

Highly recommended that they be there.

I looked for two hours once for one of those and found it directly under the bike.
 
Well I'm sure it will turn up. Maybe I'll sweep the garage.

Getting frustrated having to wait for spring. I've got the old 850 running real good. Just need for the snow to be gone.

Easy enough to make one from a paperclip, using the other as a template..

pair of snipe nose pliers, and a pair of normal pliers.

I don't think he was talking about the hairpin clips. I got the impression that it might be #8 in this diagram.
(It's hard to see the "8" in the diagram, it's the part just above the pads.)

Sorry to rain on your day :p. If it helps though, I've lost #8 in that diagram twice now. It's a tricky one to find in a dirt floor
 
Magnets work well for finding small metal parts on the ground. I have successfully used an old round magnet from a deceased speaker to find parts lost in the lawn. Good luck.
 
My garage is a oily mess. I have a pan of old oil that I drained out of the 850...I bet that spring went into there.

That diagram is for the front brake no?

Yep, I would go along with part #8 as suggested above. I also agree that a heavy-duty paper clip will work.

Its function remains the same as was I suggested earlier, though, it's still to keep the pads from rattling.

Yes John, #9 is the thing I am missing. Well if I can't find the lost one then I'm make one.

As I said, easy enough to make, and there is no way I'm paying ?3 each for paperclips :D that's about 5 bucks each over here :eek:
