    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi all,

I'm dismayed that my bike with only 9,800 miles on it smokes like Satan at cold startup under choke. A friend more familiar with bikes than myself tells me that oil leaks down into the cylinders (due to worn valves) when we're all sleeping and then at startup, it burns and gets blown out the exhaust until it's gone.

The bike does not smoke after warmed up and certainly not when flyin' down the road.

So, if it is poor fitting/worn valves that allows the oil to seep down into the cylinders, will anything short of engine/valve overhaul remedy this?

Is there another reason/reasons that bluish smoke will blow out the exhaust at startup?

I love my bike and it's a wonderful machine but this smoking issue is bringing me down to the max.

Not sure if I am mechanic enough to tackle removing the engine for that big of a job.

Any comments or ideas?
 
Most likely just valve stem seals. The guides are probably not worn with only 9800 miles, but the rubber in the seals gets hard with age and heat and then oil seeps down into the cylinders when the bike sits. It gets burned off within a few minutes. Really harmless, and a job that can put off for a while unless it bugs you. Both my 750 and 1000 do this. I'll get around to fixing it this winter.
 
I'ts def. your valve stem seals... Very cheap and somewhat easy to do yourself...
 
Make it a winter project, won't hurt anything to wait until then (if you have winter in your part of the world, otherwise wait until you get a forecast with a week of rain).

I havn't replaced my valve stem seals yet but I have had the head off my bike enough to know that it really isn't that much work. Just read your service manual, get an idea as to what you have to do, be organized and do it.

If this is your first time assume a weekend will be enough (if you have all the tools you need).
