A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Loud BANG! then problems...ideas please!

Thanks for the updates
and Kudos to the GSr for being its typical self :)

If it were an airplane would you take it up in the air?

I consider motorcycles in the same vein as airplanes. They need to be 100 % safe and ready for the road, for at 70mph if something goes wrong you will find out how merciless the nurses in the ER can be with those brushes.

Man that made wince at just the thought.

Airplanes have a LOT more room for mechanical error than motorcycles.

OK, so the clutch looks fine, I can start the bike fine. But now along with the suddenly slack chain there is a problem with the shifter.

It acts as if there is to much travel. If you upshift you have to lift the shifter all the way upthrough its entire travel, it was not like this before. Previously it shifted very easily from one gear to the next. Now you can get up into 3rd or so, but can't shift any higher unless you push down on the shifter and then lift it back up?! Downshift is OK from higher gears, until you get to 2nd or so and Its really hard to get to neutral or first. You push down on the shifter, but there isn't enough travel, it bottoms out before it shifts, you have to lift it up and down and then it'll downshift.

I have never even seen the inside of one of these transmissions, does this sound like something anyone has head of before? I'm afraid that there is something seriously wrong in the tranny now and need to get it diagnosed quick...

Any input on what to look for or try short of cracking the cases would be greatly appreciated. I know I may have to do it eventually I at least want to try anything I can before I go that far.

Thanks for all the replies so far and I really hope one of the GS Geniuses can come up with some good advice!

One other thing that I noticed was that the shaft that the shifter clamps to had a lot of play when the clutch cover was off the other side. WHen I went to bolt the shifter back on it the groove the bolt fits into was almost even with the sprocket cover. It had to come out at least 1/2" once i bolted on teh clutch cover it was OK though. Is this normal or yet another sign a grenade went off in my tranny?

Well it may be cheating but I found a cheap fix...I picked up a Yamaha FZR600 today. My wife and I were riding bicycles in our neighbor hood and I jokingly said "Look Honey a bike for sale, let's look!" Dead battery, gummed up carbs. We jumped it and barely got it going so I could take it around the block to be sure nothing major was wrong.

It ran really poorly between the gummed up carbs from sitting for three years and the competely bad battery...I got back and said "Boy I don't know it'll take a lot of work...what would you say to $500?" ...."OK"

Wow, its got a Yosh slip on that is probably worth almost that!!!:D:D:D

I got some carb cleaning to do, but other than fluid changes etc I will be set. The tires were new when he parked it...only a couple years old and still with "tire hairs" ! Pics to follow...

Much cheaper than fixing that old GS, way to go!

I passed one last summer on my way back from the Red River Rally on the side of the road for sale...all there, but surely need some work and paint. I think they were asking $600 for it....I was sorely tempted...even knocked on the door but no one answered....Fate...

Ive always thought they were kinda neat lookin bikes with that bug eyed fairing. Dont think id fit on a 600 for very long tho...

I'm surprised at how well I do fit on it. I'm about 6'4" and if I slide my butt all the way back on the seat I fit well. The clipons are still a reach, I honestly don't know how someone much smaller would be able to ride it without killing their arms.

I am still planning on trying to figure out what's going on with the GS though, I feel like I owe it to the bike! It shifts through all the gears without any grinding, popping, etc. its almost like there is some sort of return spring broken or something I'm hoping someone on here will be able to provide some insight. I'd like to get it going again and pass it on to someone who will ride it and love it.

OK, so its not a Suzi or a GS, but it does have a Yosh slipon!:D

That might be me...

Tom, if you think you might be interested in it PM me or call me some time and we'll chat. I really don't want it to go to the wreckers, but I'm far more interested in getting the FZR sorted out first before worrying about the 450.

I'm gone, traveling for a couple weeks.
I would like to take that 450,
if the price is right.

really right.

Your shift forks may be bent or mangled. If a piece can off them then that may have been the bang you heard as it found it's way through the transmission. Just a guess of course.

Just give me a call when you are back in town and we'll see if we can't come to a meeting of the minds. It ran great (still does when it has gas in it), so if we can figure out the tranny issue it should be back in business. Of course the other option is to find either another 450 engine to swap in or better yet a GS500 is a direct bolt in and about a 25% increase in hp!

Have a fun trip!
