If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Lower crankcase half - Where do these O rings go?

As in my other thread, I'm almost ready to put the crankcase halves together, but I can't find where to put the two O rings I got. I made sure I ordered everything OEM off the fiche for the crank cases to try to avoid having to split them again if a dodgy after market part fails.

The two O rings in the packet in the left of the picture below are what I'm confused about (tiny) and they're number 20 in the fiche. I'm now thinking they belong with the oil jets 17 and 18.

Anyone have any idea?

I agree Pete it looks like 17 and 18 are a chance and No. 19 is also a possibility. Look at the oil jets, there should be a groove machined in them to accept the "O" ring. Also check the fit of the oil jet in their respective holes to see if they are a sloppy fit without the "O" ring. Then see if they are a firm fit in their holes with the "O" ring fitted. You should be able to work it out from there I think.

#20 looks too small, and there are only one of them on the engines I've done. Take a look at the crankcase for a recessed area for the O-ring to sit into. That will help you judge the size needed.

FYI, there are two larger O-rings that fit on the oil pump. Don't forget those.

Ed and Don, second thread of mine I say cheers to both of you :D

Anyways, I believe I may have it worked out, and I think the fiche for the 81 450E is actually misleading as to the location of the O rings.

Have a look at number 20 in my original post above (or below if that's the way it displays for you), then have a look at number 20 in the '83 450E fiche below which is the same part number:

http://www.alpha-sports.com/spst/1983 GS450E/10.htm

Couldn't paste the pic from the fiche on this one for some reason, keeps coming back with the dreaded red X.

My brain was turning to jelly at work today doing some scripting (not my strongest skill set) so I had to take a break and did a Google search on the O ring part number which showed they use the same O rings on all sorts of models. Probably should have done that earlier... oh well.

I happened to stumble on later (85 and 88) model 450's and when i checked, they were there under the jets on the top crankcase.

So, pending a second opinion, I believe my dilemma is solved and I can continue putting the bottom crankcase on :D

Oh, and Ed, as for the O rings for the oil pump, I did notice I'd neglected to order those while running through everything again last night, but at least I don't need them to get the crankcases together, I can get them soon without having to wait again.

Well I wasn't going to touch it tonight, but I couldn't help myself.

I lifted the top crankcase up as much as I dared so I don't dislodge the transmission or crankshaft/counter balance shaft and had a close look at the oil jets.

While it wasn't real easy to see clearly, I believe I could make out what looked to be an O ring underneath the one I could see, so I believe that means full steam ahead to get the crankcases together.

I like it :D

Thought I'd just triple check by scouring the Clymer manual, but alas there is no mention of these oil jets anywhere, not even to inspect them.

Unfortunately I can't text search the PDF so there may be mention somewhere obscure I haven't come across yet though...
