When you say 'PFM' I'm assuming you mean PMF (Precision Metal Fab Racing). I purchased their 5/8" offset 530 for $60. It worked out perfectly for me as I needed that offset. I'm also assuming that you are looking at their 1/2" offset with a nose for $80.

I really don't know why they have that one with a nose - the only reason for having one is for extreemly high output motors or very large offsets - yours doesn't apply on either. I suppose if you were willing to part with the $80 you could buy it and just not use the nose.

Which gets back to the reason I'm posting. The output sprocket is subject to some healthy torque. I would be very cautious trusting welds on this part. I'm no expert, but I doubt that you will get the penetration necessary.

You may be better off in the long run to get the sprocket from PMF and just loose the nose piece.

Ok Swanny,

I am detecting a negative trend here.

If you look closely at the design you will see that the counter cog is only recessed 4mm. leaving 60% intact for taking loads. It could be used by itself granted in a weakened condition. The welds and two pins more than make up for the 4mm loss of material.

I do appreciate your input. It is important to lookat all the downsides with projects.

cheers,

katman

i just talked to PFMR again today and they told me they don't have a 3/8 offset at all, or a 5/8 without a nose. They only make one 5/8 530 pitch 17tooth with a nose for 80.00. All the rest are 630 pitch.

Deb down there told me they haven't made any others.

Katman - I'm not trying to be negative - really.

I purchased a 5/8" offset 530 without a nose from them. I have no idea why they said they didn't have one. If you would like I can get the p/n from a receipt I have somewhere - I keep them.

I wasn't talking about the 4 mm removal - that is nesessary so that enough of the threads are exposed so the nut is seated properly. I was talking about the shear forces between the 2 - 10mm pieces. The one thing that is workin in your favor is that both pieces are splined.

Again, I'm not working at being critical. I think you have done an excellent job and I said so earlier. Think of this as an engineering design review prior to moving to production. It's meant to be positive input.

If you come accross the p/n I would like it so I can ask them if they stll have one.

how long ago did you buy it?

She lead me to believe they never made one but I find that hard to believe.

A part number would go along way to clear up the situation.

well I am moving onto braided brake lines and oil lines. I can't believe how expensive Earl's is. 22.00 CDN for one banjo bolt?????what is up with that.

The cams are done, the barrels are bored to 1166 and the head is ported this weekend. Then its over to get the valve job and back together she goes. Just in time for fist snow.

I ordered a manual cam chain tensioner from Star Racing and will put together the top end oiling kit as soon as I rob a bank to pay for the braided lines and fittings.

I've been told to get rid of the "AVON" azarows....They look good don't they perform?

Katman, the first pass through the garage did not net the receipt. I need to do some work out there today, so I'll give it a shot again. I know I don't throw these way.

My head is messssssed up so I have to re-powder coat it. DRAGGG. All the parts are done so the final engine assembly can be done.

I decided to go with anodized alum. fittings for my brakes. I like alum.

Where did you pick up the brake fittings? Those aren't legal in Ontario so beware.

Cheers, Steve

Laws..what laws?? WE don't need any stinkin laws...

I'm in "BC" no such laws out here. It's an infringment of our right to look kool, go fast and reduce emisions by using alternative modes of transport.

So I leave my hemi Dodge in the driveway and take my two wheeler.

Hello Steve
Please enlighten me with the Ontario law you are refering about. Do u mean that I can not run Braided lines. Where can I find out some more info about this law.

Regards, Archie

Hello Again Katman

Keep us up to date with more photos.

Hey Katman
Just hade a great thought. I will visit u in the spring so we can chill and go for a ride. I used to live in Chetwyned back in the early 80's.
Good Idea?
Archie

Katman here I go again Brain dead tonite.
please tell me more about coating your engine. what color is it? will that type of coating hold in heat and will it last sooking new for a long time? got a photo of your motor.
Thanks Archie

Archie,

The motor is 110% gloss Black same as frame. It does retain some heat and does stand up very well. Harley is powder coating their engines from the factory.

This Guy has done hundreds of motors and says its 10x tuffer than paint. You can't even sandblast it off the sand bounces off. This is good for road rash from front tire protection.

The only thing that gets this stuff off is walnut blasting. Very tuff stuff. I paid 250.00 canadian for sandblasting of frame and entire motor and 400.00 for coating. that is 500.00 usd. That inc. motor mounts, triples and kick stand.
I am going to fasten her together with pollised allan's. It should be together this weekend ready to fit into the frame....I am farely excited.

I haven't seen her together for a very long time..
