    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

manual cam chain tensioner upgrade

I want to install an Ape manual cam chain tensioner on my `79 gs 1000e. Do I merely remove the old auto tensioner then install the manual one or is there a specific procedure that I should follow? Do I need to have the motor at TDC before I begin the upgrade
 
I have one on my KZ750. There are instructions on the package. It seems to work OK. Takes a bit of adjustment to get it working correctly. There is a tendency to want to over tighten the tensioner. Once you get it properly adjusted it does what its supposed to do. I don't remember putting the engine at TDC just don't rotate the engine once you remove the tensioner. Basically you remove the stock tensioner, install a new gasket and bolt the manual tensioner in place. You need to turn the bolt on the tensioner to remove the slack in the chain and then back it off and tighten the locknut.
 
I have installed them on a couple bikes and you just follow the instructions.
It is pretty easy to feel the tension, as mentioned don't overtighten.
 
I'd put the engine on 1-4 TDC and verify the cam timing hasn't jumped after install. Wouldn't call installing one an "upgrade", unless you have aftermarket cams/springs, and run the bike at high rpm's regularly.
 
Like everyone mentioned, there is a tendency for people to adjust them too tight. One trick that i use, that isn't really the best method, is to adjust while the bike is running. As soon as your cam chain stops making noise, lock it down. Rev it up some, and as long as it's quiet, leave it set there.

I have also done this, its just hard to get at the adjustment nut with the carbs in the way.
