Measuring Float Height

I understand that you start the measurement from the bottom of the float bowl with the gasket off, to....

1) the flange that you can bend to set the float height? - really hard to measure to when the floats are on. (located in the middle of the plate that holds the two floats together).
2) there is a indicator kind of mark on one end of the floats, not meant to be bent. (metal indicator thingy)

Which one of these do you measure to?

Also, this may be a stupid question but you measure with the carbs upside down right? so the floats arn't hanging in the air

after doing some more research..


i have come to realize that you measure the float height to the floats themselves(the black part) and not anything on the metal thing holding the two floats together..

Can any1 verify this?

Also, do i measure from the ridge on the float bowl, or on the flat of the float bowl? or is the ridge not big enough to make to huge of a difference

Once you measure the float height it is really necessary to check the fuel level in the bowls. Even if all your floats are set to the same measured height other factors come into play (condition of the floats, needle valve..etc) when determining the fuel level. Fuel level is critical to properly setup carburetors.

I recently discovered this while rebuilding a set of carbs. I used a set of digital calipers to set the height. All the floats measured 21mm for the carbs I was working on. When I measured the fuel level, two were ok, one was too high, the other one was too low. Minor tweaking of the float tabs brought the levels into spec.

The hard part is making a gauge; you need to get an extra drain screw, drill a hole in the center, glue in a piece of metal tubing, and then put a piece of clear tubing over that tube.

To measure you hook up your gauge and start the engine while on the center stand. The measurement is basically the same for all CV type carbs although you should double check – adjust the float tang until you get the fuel in the proper range.

Hey Ed..I was able to find an OEM Suzuki gauge on e-bay for $15 including shipping. Supposed to include the 6mm drain screw adapter.

Is the drainscrew thread M6,

On the mikuni BS32 the drain screw is a 6mm x .75mm pitch.
