mechanical advance limited range GS550

While checking the timing of the bike ran into my first bit of weirdness with the new GS. Good news is I have some sort of Electronic Ignition. Bad news is I can't get the full range out of my mechanical advance. While taking it apart to see if lube was the issue, I learned the outer thrust washers and clips were missing. cleaned, lubed, and painted the timing marks anyways but still can't get full range of advance. If I set it at 17 at 1500, I'm at ~32 above 2500. going to grab a replacement advance to rule that out. checked a lead off each coil and timing was consistent seems to be in working order aside from the advance.

I had a couple of things I wanted to double check:

If for whatever reason the replacement advance also can't complete the 17-37 sweep should I set it for the 37 degrees at 2500 rpm, and just live with whatever it happens to be below 1500? That's how I found it setup, timing was off at idle but at 37 at 2500. didn't notice a starting difference between the two. but it's an unfamiliar bike at this point.

Any chance someone knows what the pictured ignition is? Had a look through the parts diagrams for the GS550's that use a mechanical advance Suzuki setups to rule out OEM but image search didn't turn up anything either and there aren't any markings.

Finally not strictly related to the ignition more to parts in general should I expect my VIN and engine number to match for a 77? the range for both are the 77 model year, last three on frame is 469 and 662 on the engine. I'm going to grab a p/n 33120-45021, since it visually matches what I have on the bike.

If it were me, I'd start by checking the index marks against true TDC on number 1. Some say you can only do this with a positive stop and a degree wheel. I'm quite happy using a dial gauge to ascertain TDC. That way you have a timing datum on an unknown system. I always set the timing at full advance, because I spend most of my ride at over 2,750 - 3,000 rpm. Timing does make a difference. This my messing around. https://www.thegsresources.com/_for...al-ignition/1742579-retarding-ignition-timing

BTW the Kat runs fast after the fettling.

Sounds normal. I noticed the same issue on a 1979 550E, when installing a Dyna S; the timing couldn't reach the full F mark on the advancer. I static set the bike at T and didn't think any further on the matter, and the bike ran just fine.
