Well, today I bought a GS550 engine to tear down and learn about before rebuilding by '79 GS1000 into an 1100 using the Wiseco kit. The guy I bought the engine from had a shed full of parts, including about a dozen carbs, and said his set of 29mm Mikunis taken from a KZ1000 would be a great replacement for the stock VM26. So, I bought them for a whopping $20 thinking what the hell.

The new carbs are really similar to what is on my GS. The choke on the clutch side rather than in the middle. It has an accelerator pump on the bottom of #2. The pods diameter is identical.

So, did I waste $20 on a gamble, or will the KZ1000 carbs bolt on the GS1000?

Also, where do I measure to verify that these are really 29mm?

Yes I'm a rookie. Thanks.

in either case if they fit or not, your 20.00 carbs are worth at least 250.00 o rway higher if you get the right guy that really wants them..measure the inside diameter on the engine side and that will tell the size.

Exactly

Very nice upgrade, or a valuable asset

I'd sodablast them, clean and replace the rubber bits

I'll give you $21 for them

So will they work, and if so should I disconnect the pump? C'mon. Little help for the new guy

I'd use the pump but before even attempting to install those carbs they should be fully torn down, cleaned, and replace all the O-rings inside. Cycleorings.com may have a kit that will work otherwise you will have to scramble some but finding O-rings isn't that hard.

While fairly rare, there were sets of VM29's sold with an accelerator pump. Plus there was a Mikuni add-on kit to install an accelerator pump on VM29's.

All those fatory fitted sets had the 17mm hex head drain plug on the float bowls.

Yes, they will work

Leave the pump connected

Clean them up like any other VM, I don't know if the O rings are different than the 26s

I think they are 28mm. Calipers read between 28.3 and 28.7, they came off of a KZ1000A, and I found a couple online posts about that model having a 28mm pumper.

Probably going to be a nighmare to set up properly.

yup sounds like 28s..and think about getting with Chef..he rebuilds them and i am sure there are several others here that can domit or answer all the questions you will have.

no set of smooth bores that i have ever seen have an accel pump on em
nor did i ever hear of or see accel pump kits for sale or added to a set of 29MM smoothbore carbs
i have seen many sets of 28mm kawi 1000 carbs trying to be sold as smoothbores
but if you know what your looking for you'll know that they are not 29MM smoothbores
i am not to saying that the 28mm pumpers are not a nice upgrade for a GS because they are
but they are defiantly not 29mm smoothbores

Post 18 said they were measuring 28.3 thus they are 28 pumpers..i would say
yup agreed
and i did see that thanks
i was replying specifically to the quote in my first reply
if these 29 smoothie pumpers exist and i'm almost cretin they don't
i would love to see some detailed pictures of them
