DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi all! I am currently rebuilding a 1981 GS450s and have been having carb issues. What I have found is that there appear to be two different models of the Mikuni Bs34ss carb.

The twins I have look like this: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_zs1oDzUohGY/TXpcVNp5-uI/AAAAAAAAB3I/tthngUbxE2A/s512/P1040047.JPG

But I have seen other models like this: http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/5/9/8/0/3/8/webimg/864103405_tp.jpg

You can see that the bowl shapes are different as the jets sit in the bowl rather than in the main body.

When I had issues with these carbs awhile back (my jet casings were stripped), a friend of mine had the exact same bike with the latter variation of these Mukini's. I put them on my bike and it started and purred like a dream.

Is anyone else aware of this carb differentiation, why there is a differentiation, and if it affects performance on different bikes or if it doesn't matter (they are same same)?

Thanks!

The ones in your first link are typical of the later ones (in the USA), I think it was from '83-on. The '80-'82 models were like your second link.

Why the difference? Nobody knows, but there must have been a reason for the change that made sense at the time.

The 450 engine was used for many years virtually unchanged. There is no reason to think the carbs wouldn't be both forwards and backwards compatible with different year bikes. I think the bigger issue is getting them properly cleaned and the O-rings updated. Any 30+ year old carbs you come up with should be fully stripped, cleaned, and re-O-ringed with fresh.
