mixture screw blues

I'm taking the carbs apart for re-build but cannot get the mix screw out of # 1. I've tried heat, pb blaster, paint thinner. I drilled through the center of the mix screw and removed the tip, o-ring, washer and spring, which remains fully compressed. There is a thin layer of the brass stuck in the housing and will not break free. It's in the carb dip now, to see if it helps. Anything else to try. Worst-case scenario, is it possbile to use a tap to remove the remaining brass?

Yeah you could probably use a tap, IF YOU COULD FIND ONE.

I have an extra #1 body, if you are interested.

That is, as long as your #1 is the one under the clutch hand.
(some people mistakenly number the cylinders from throttle hand side to clutch hand side, so it pays to be sure)

how much brass you have left in there? just enough stuck in the threads? after the dip see if it is looser, try some heat with a small focused flame and use a fine pick like a dental pick and see if that will get it out.

If you have more brass then that, try some heat and a left handed bit that isn't bigger then the threads.

it's fairly thin. i can see the threads of the housing in some spots, but lost a thread or two toward the top on the body.

I'm sure that you've learned not to drill out these mixture screws. I cut the port leading to the top of the screw (only used to cap off) and cut a notch into the screw Using heat and a good screwdriver usually gets them out.

thanks for the tip. i will definitely hold onto this one. i sure hope i don't have to fight this problem again for a long time. i sure count on l'il blackie running much better when it's over. the previous owner must have fought this problem also, but gave up. the screw was stuck and the spring came out fully compressed. he must have felt the problem- just didn't wanna eff with it. that's ok, i'll take care of 'er.

btw, it makes sense, i could've cut a groove from l to r with a mini grinder on my rotary tool that could have cut a good notch into the screw. the housing groove could be epoxied up to look factory. yepper, good idea, chef. sorry man, i'm unworthy. for anyonw wondering, if you have a mix screw with factory dimensions, you could cut a good 2mm groove into the top of the screw.

It's a 4X0.7 tap. Should be easy to find
