    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Monoshock Conversion: Possibilities

Ok guys. Here is a good one.

I want to fit one of these: The Perreli Scorpian MT 90/AT 18" 150/70 R 18 M/C 70V TL

On to this: The Honda 03-04 CBR 600rr Unit Pro-Link rear suspension system

Which will then be attached to the rear of my '79 GS 425e. Can it be done? Is there an equivalent tyre that can be used? Even better, if it can't be done, is there an equivalent swingarm system that this tyre will fit to?

One of the reasons I am leaning toward this kind of swingarm is because your average monoshock swingarm requires you to send the actual shock absorber up under the seat, where the battery and electrics are all kept. Long story short, less ****ing around.
 
If you look at where the top of that shock is, and especially the top of the shock mount, I bet it still interferes with the battery box. I have a mono-shocked KZ1000 and the frame isn't much different than a GS. At least not that much different than the 750 I had. Try and picture that swingarm in your picture on my bike. I think the intereference might be slightly less, but I still see the top shock mount getting in the way. Just my two cents. It's best to do lots and lots of measuring before you start tearing down the bike.

Hey mate... ummm... is your aim to go monoshock or just to fit that tyre?

I have one of those in a 4.10-18 on the rear of my 450 with the stock swingarm and rim.

I'm looking to go monoshock. Give the old thing better handling and ride comfortability as well as giving it a bit more of an aggressive stance. I am going to be modifying the back end, and saving space by installing this particular swing arm is just one of the reasons why i want it. It also looks as if it will be a hole lot easier to install (less modification to the frame needed). I won't have to figure out the required geometry for the shock to be mounted, because it already is. Genius.

That's cool, was just going to say that's an extreme method to be able to mount a tyre :p

Search Scottychop's mega 450 build on here, pretty sure that had a mono shock rear on it.

And also search for Billy T's 450 as he had a USD front end on his.
 
Scottychop makes it look so easy! The swingarm he used also fits well with the look he went for. Can't see where he put the battery though. I'm guessing in the rear fairing. As I'm not going to have a rear fairing on mine half the battle will be figuring out where to put it. It may be half the battle, but thats half the fun!

I used an AGM battery that allowed me to turn it on it's side. I fabricated a battery box to hold the battery sideways and thus it moved up in the frame. This gave me just enough clearance over the shock.

Nice work! How protected is the battery from the elements, e.g. from crap kicked up by the tyre?

Probably better than stock. The original plastic inner fender is in place on the bike and my battery box actually surrounds the battery completely. The only exposed part is the terminals that face the front. The bike has been on the road for over a year with zero electrical issues. I don't intentionally ride in the rain, but have been caught out.

Here's a shot from the top so you can see how the top of the box covers the battery. Notice the fuse box that is attached to a riser welded to the rear of the box. I can assure you that this battery isn't getting wet any more than the stock setup.

Testarossa beat me to it, was going to say an AGM or Lithium battery will allow you a lot more flexibility. Shorai's have a good name and there's now Gravity or Anti Gravity batteries which sound similar...

To prevent unwanted debris entering the area, just get a hugger stuck on that swingarm.
