  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

thanks guys, im going to adjust valves today, probably order or rings an start on carbs lol...

now after some more reading it seems a airbox is better for this bike...so pods idea out the window...this bike has no mufflers either...got it that way..will this affect anything?

has 4 into 2 exaust..cut right where the muffler started

also on the valve adjust the thing didint say the clearance for the 8v

Yes it does, later in the pages.

But to make life easier, .03 - .08mm

The cut pipes will cause you to run lean, burn valves, run very hot... You might want to re-jet while you have the carbs off, or think about replacing the exhaust with an OEM system.

o ok i missed it, i read over it again...i got some other stock mufflers with the bike..but i tried to make them fit but no luck..

How are you trying to fit the stock mufflers? Just a friction fit? Do they align with the mounting brackets?

How do they not fit?

There are a few really good threads on exhaust. I'm having an issue with the replacements on my 650 as well, and I've sort of exhausted the friction fit possibilities. I'm coming to the realization that I want to weld the muffler to the header instead of using a clamp system, in order to get them hanging where I want. Muffler tape and putty only go so far.
 
the brackets dont line up..looks like it fits otherwise? im thinking its off a smaller bike

i was about to cut the mufflers off these an weld it to the pipe on the bike...can i just jet it to match exaust? i plan on a 4-1 header soon

edit: pulled carbs back off along with the intakes...1 o ring compeletly missing, one was swelled it seemed, the other 2 looked ok...

maybe that had something to do with it...just maybe lol

ok valves check out good..im really thinkin this thing has new shims an cam etc maybe...it all looks perfect to be honest

edit: valves are to tight couldnt fit a .003 between them, only the #4 exaust fit a .003...i bought a new set of feelers an junked my old bent wore out ones lol

OK, please back up just a minute, put down the tools and look at your feeler gauges.

Are they INCH feelers with METRIC approximations also printed on them?
You can tell they are INCH feelers if the smallest one is likely 0.0015, then 0.002, 0.0025, 0.003, 0.004, 0.005, etc.
NOTE THE NUMBER OF ZEROES BETWEEN THE DECIMAL AND THE NUMBERS.

If you have METRIC feelers, you might see them start with 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05, etc.
Again, NOTE THE NUMBER OF ZEROES.

Keman said (correcty) that the clearance was 0.03 to 0.08 mm. That's MILLIMETERS.
YOU came back with measurements that were apparently in INCHES.

You can NOT mix the two systems. The specs in INCHES will be approximately 0.0012 to 0.0031 INCHES, or, more simply, 0.001 to 0.003"

Note that there is a "3" in both sets of measurements, but one is the minimum, the other is the maximum.

You said you could only fit a .003 in one valve. That tells me you are using INCHES, so feel free to try them all the way down to the smallest one, the .0015. If that one doesn't fit, then the valves are too tight. In fact the one that does pass the .003 might be too loose.

Yes, those are might small clearances, but that's what is called for.

These clearances have to be that narrow. Just a few mm over and the shims can rattle doing damage to the buckets. A few more mm and the shims can actually jump out and do LOTS of damage.

A few mm too tight and the valves do not close to completely seat. This allows heat from combustion to burn the seats, valves, springs, and guides. It can also allow backfire through the carbs setting your air box on fire! Air box fires are not fun, and can be very expensive. (don't ask how I know this. Just know that since then I have been on top of adjusting my valves regularly.)
 
I know this may be getting close to dead horse, but I once had a bike that I could not get dialed in... It gave black smoke out the exhaust, but white plugs... I tried having my carb Guru dial it in, but everything he tried seemed to do nothing. Then, as I was prepping the bike for sale (I'd had it with this bike) I tried a valve adjust... ALL four exhaust valves were too tight to get any feeler in. Turns out, the valves never closed and both the valves and seats had been damaged. On the comp stroke it was pushing raw fuel air out into the exhaust causing the black smoke, and pulling air back in on the intake stroke causing the lean burn on the plugs.

After a valve job, and replacing a few parts, and adjusting the valves correctly, the bike ran perfect for two more years. ('till it met a guardrail)

We are not supposed to even have one TENTH of a millimeter, let alone "a few more" of them.

The range for the clearance is only five hundreths of ONE millimeter, that is 1/20 of ONE millimeter, actually less than the thickness of a piece of paper.

Yes, we're talking small clearances and small tolerance, so it is VERY important to get it right. :D

ok my feeler gauges say example .005 then below that says w/e in mm..just a crappy "oem" brand set from autozone

That means you have INCH feelers with metric approximations.

You can use that set, but the .005" is WAY too large, you have to go down to the .003" to use as your max clearance, and on down to the .0015" for your minimum.

If you don't have anything smaller than .005, you need another set of feelers.
