A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

My 82 GS650GZ Build

Forum Newbie
I picked this 82 650 a little over a year ago and have spent quite a bit of time fixing and upgrading since then. I actually have a couple photos floating around here, but it sat most of the summer (Phoenix is hot) and I’ve spent a few months sorting things out. First was basic stuff: plugs, oil/filter, diff oil, brake pads/fluid, replace the 20 year old tires, etc. The gauges were in rough shape, so I replaced with a set from an 81 (no fuel gauge, slightly different pinout). I also quickly replaced all lights to clean it up - LED headlight bulb, cheap turn signals, LED tail. I’ve since designed a basic tail light/license mount to clean up the rear, and am planning to 3D print something. It didn’t have mirrors, so I picked up a set of bar ends, though I think round mirrors would look better.

I’ve been chasing hanging idle and other issues, so I finally broke down and pulled the carbs. First up was a deep clean with guitar string and carb cleaner. I replaced the floats and installled a Dynojet Stage 3 kit to match the pods that came on the bike. I replaced the boots but am having revving issues when it’s on the kickstand, so I’ll be pulling the carbs off to check floats again, this time with the clear tubing method. I’ll probably break down and get a balance gauge while I’m at it.

I just checked the valves and set them to ~.10-.12mm per advice I’ve seen on here. All were practically at zero.

The latest project was a brake upgrade using salty_monk’s Twinpot adapters. I went a bit overboard and bought CBR600F4 rotors, both Kawasaki Z1000 and EX650 calipers, as well as both R1/R6 and Z1400 radial master cylinders. I plan to try both sets of calipers with both master cylinders; I’ve ran both masters with the EX650s thus far. Full write-up incoming, stay tuned.

Very nice build. Very tidy. Regarding posting multiple pics, there is a better way. See link in my signature. Go to post # 6.

I've never seen a 650 in the wild. Not very many surviving I suppose, 'round here anyway. This one is a nice example. Looking good!

I suppose you're aware it takes a little while for new pads and rotors to really work together efficiently, right? Sounds like you're swapping master cylinders to see which works better.

Just as an example, I sent my Rotors to Truedisc and had them machined. They look brand new or even better than new. Those in combination with new EBC semi sintered pads needed quite a few miles to really grab. Now after bedding in well they're great.

Great info, thanks guys. I finished the install a couple weeks ago, then tore it down to check valves. The valve cover gasket disintegrated when I did that, so it sat while I waited on a new one. I should’ve made my own using the guid on bikecliff’s site. New brakes have probably 100 miles on them. I did bed the pads with a dozen or so 30-5mph stops.
