A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

You going to leave that crank end just spinning in the wind? Won't that bend it the first time the bike is dumped on the left side? How about hacking off the end? Might save the engine.

I believe thats how you start it.

Maybe put a shroud around it so you can still get to it but it's at least partially protected.

his starter is still there. Just missing the flywheel and stator.

Starter clutch is attached to the back side of the rotor, which appears to be missing.

Yes, hill climb...which means he is going to be dumping the bike after many failed climb attempts...which means that crank end is going to get hammered.

The hills they use for this sport will be mostly dirt, so the crank shouldn't take any more of a beating than anything else.

Dirt is hard to climb, rock is much easier. Check out the hills in Moab for big mounds of rock. Beautiful and easy.

Gotta' add here that looks like a lot of fun. Which events are you planning to attend?

I plan on hillclimbing in the MN and WI. But I am going to try and make it to Billings MT this year too. I will take a picture of my starter this weekend.

Too far away for me to go - damn. Good luck - I don't think you'll be wanting for power.

I'm waiting for the mountains to thaw and we just got more snow.

Love your work! can you tell us a bit about it, eg whats the frame, engine etc....just curious as i recently bought a HD sportster to do similiar, but iam enjoying it on the road, maybe a GS adventure tourer isnt sauch a crazy idea.....Your bike is the coolest ive seen in ages. Lookin frwd to more pics.

The frame: is half gs1000 and back half is cr500. Engine is bone stock (for now) I figured when I can ride the bike wide open I will put more into it:D. This was my dad's engine in 1986, then he sold it after winning hillclimb nationals . I will update with some pictures soon.

What's the technique for managing the power of a four during a hill climb? It wont be the same as a big single, the lowdown torque isn't there. Do you keep it revving and use the clutch to feed the power to the wheel? :-k

I can't speak for him, but even with a big single (XR650R) you need to keep the RPM's up and slip the clutch if they drop. The key is momentum and keeping the engine in the powerband.
