DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

My GS550E is stalling unpredictably.

I ordered boots from Boulevard Suzuki this week, and the o-rings are arriving tomorrow.

These came off with an impact driver and a little persuasion. Looks like I found the vacuum leak ;)

Actually, the leak is at the o-ring. The plastic covering has nothing to do with it. But it is always good to have fresh boots on a 30 year old bike.

I can definitely peel the rubber from the metal with my fingers, and I'm pretty sure that's bad.

I installed a new set of carb boots, along with new viton o-rings and stainless allen hardware.

Everything went together easily, especially the way the carbs clamped into the new boots. Luxurious!

I had previously sized-up my idle jets (due to my ignorance of the air leak) so I went back down a size before installing the carbs.

I warmed up the bike and rode around the neighborhood for about 15 min. I intentionally came to complete stops and released the throttle, trying to copy the behavior that would stall the bike in the past.

I couldn't get it to stall!

The idle is a bit rough, so I'm going to readjust the mixture screws and do a vacuum sync, but doing a very basic form of maintenance fixed a very annoying problem!

Update: I rode this bike to Milwaukee and back and after a good half hour of riding, the idle issues were back. Bike seemed to run great in the mid and high revs, but coming down to idle it was rich - burbling idle, fuel smell, stalling and backfiring.

I got home and tried to adjust the mixture screws with no luck. I went through the carbs and made sure the passages were all still clear, and sized the idle jet down to stock. I could not adjust the air screws to a steady idle, and the bike wanted to stall most of the time.

The idle was still showing rich characteristics, which makes no sense with the stock idle jet and aftermarket K&N filters.

While I had a plug out, I checked the spark against the engine case, and it looked bad. It seemed reasonable the coils were not doing their job, and the fuel mixture was not fully combusting. Does that make sense?

Please define "looks bad". Was the color not blue or white, but red or yellow instead? Was it intermittent? What color was the plug tip, center electrode and ceramic?
Let us know, please.

What is the voltage at the coils?

Have you had a chance to go through the electrical? You should have less than 1V drop at the coils compared to your battery voltage.

How are your plug caps and leads? What resistance readings do you get across them?

The spark isn't quite red, but definitely purplish. Not a fat, healthy blue.

The plug looked like the mid-range was optimal, but the high and idle are rich. I haven't noticed any real high rpm issues though.

The wiring is all new, so there's not much if any drop between the battery and coil. The leads are old(stock) and the caps are new. I don't recall what resistance read, but it was uniform across all 4.

If you haven't touched the carbs lately, running rich can also indicate an air restriction. Check the air filter? Something make a nest in the airbox or exhaust?

Could still be electrical too, I have read of others having intermittent problems with their coils and ignitor.
