If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

My Gs850 project bike

I got it to a nice idle and rode around the neighborhood a few times. Everything seems good besides a slow leak coming from the oil filter cover. (Any ideas on what I can do temporarily stop that until I can permanently fix it when I return in 6 months?) And Thank you all for the helpful information and advice.

Have you replaced the o-ring in the filter cover recently? Are the bolts holding the cover to the crankcase evenly torqued?

It?s a new o-ring that came with the WIX filter. I didn?t torque them down too much because at least two of the stud bolt threads are damaged.

If your going to leave it 6 months either drain the carbs, or get some fuel stabiliser work out how much you need for a full tank put it in the tank fill it run around the block for 10 minutes until the carbs get full of petrol/stabilised fuel.
filling the tank reduces condensation (in my view) park/ return start.

Just wanted some opinions on here if I should sell this motorcycle or continue spending money to fix it. If I were keeping it I?d have a shop do the work because I?m tired of working on it. After doing the sh755 install the charging system still isn?t charging the battery. Plus it?s got an oil leak, needs front forks serviced. New airbox boots and probably other stuff. Should I just scrap it and buy something that will be ready to ride?

I wish I was closer. I could always use another 850 project. :-\\\

My son is in the Tampa area right now. If he had a way to bring it back, I'd have him pick it up for you.

I?m still finishing my basic training cycle (22 weeks in all) and will be returning home in less than a month.
im figuring with all the spare time I?ll have because of the corona virus I might as well try and fix the motorcycle up properly. I have to admit I really never took the time to step by step diagnose the electrical problems... What are yalls opinions on just fixing the specific issue, or would it be a good option to look into the motogadget m-unit?

Painted my rusty seat pan after sandblast and wire wheel. Ordered a seat cover. Next step is to fix the problem with the battery not charging, and then doing the fork seals.

Ordered a couple parts. Wheels & steering stem bearing kits, brake pads, etc. Installed new choke cable & clutch cable adjuster(no more duct tape on lever)

Here is a little of what I plan to do cosmetically. 1. Paint tank & Side Covers Black 2. polish or wrap the headers 3. wet sand aluminum & touch up black areas on wheels 4. paint engine/ restore case cover emblems.

I wouldn't recommend wrapping the headers - apart form the cost and hassle to get the wrap on properly all it really does is help trap moisture against the pipes and make them rot faster.

Either polish or paint is the best IMO.

I have a seat to a gs850gl that has recently been reupholstered. I will not be needing it since im putting a cafe racer style seat on my bike. If you would like it i can let it go for a good price. I live in Orlando.

Any tips on how I should start diagnosing the charging system? I see a lot of information, but there are so many different threads about the "stator papers" I'm not sure which one is the most correct. I'm reading my battery at 12.5v with key off and 12.1v with the key on.

The 12.5 is a bit low (should be 12.6 to 12.8, depending on battery type), but not "bad".
Start the bike, check the battery voltage at idle.
Check the voltage at 5000 RPM.
Check the voltage at idle again.
Turn the bike OFF, check the voltage again.

.

Idle was at 12.4, 5000 rpm at 12.6, idle again at 12.3, off voltage again was 12.4

Ive also got a battery tender that I need to install but if I need to get a new battery to get accurate results I'll wait to put it on.

Today I took off the exhaust. It has smoke coming from under the engine where the replaceable "connectors" sometimes degrade over time.
The main reason I took it off is to get good access to the oil filter cover studs because I need to replace those. I am thinking about buying a new exhaust system because I figure the time it would take to polish and buy 4 replacement exhaust connector pieces (about $25 a piece) it would be a pain. I also practiced some polishing of the engine head cover caps and getting decent results, not sure if I will polish the engine side covers though because that might be a ton of work when I would be just as happy with painting them.

So I'd like to get my motorcycle riding reliably on the road as fast as possible, so I've decided to outsource a lot of the things I need done, such as..

1. Forks serviced by bike shop
2. Seat cover by local upholster
3. frame powder coated(haven't looked into price on this)
4. gas tank & side covers (missing left currently) bondo/paint by auto body friend
5. delkevic exhaust install (myself)
6. rebuild carbs again (myself)

Now for the most important part of the rebuild, the engine leak. not sure how much this will cost but I feel like the most efficient thing to do would be to have whatever gaskets are leaking replaced by a bike shop.
