    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Looking good! I need to take more pics when I work. I get too caught up in what I'm doing.
 
What cams are you putting in it? If using stock cams & you want top end power, degree the exhaust cam at 108 & the intake at 106. If you want bottom end & mid range, set them at 104 & 102. The exhaust always 2 degrees bigger #. If using aftermarket cams let us know which ones for recommendations. Ray.
 
There is a company that makes carbon fiber versions of the ignition covers. If you're interested I can get you more info (don't have it on hand).
 
I am going to run the stock cams for now and enjoy the extra midrange the displacement will give me, and if I need more on top I will get cams for it.
I dont have any equipment to degree the cams, so I am going to install them as the manual says.
 
Very cool project. Any mods planned besides the motor? I love the fact that you're 'blacking' the motor. Please share details on what all your short and long range plans are for this bike.
 
You really should degree in the cams. Get a dial indicator from Harbor Freight, print the degree wheel from "in the garage", drill a piece of metal to mount the dial indicator and either get some APE cam sprockets or machine the stock sprockets.
We'll help you do it.

I will look into scaring up a dial indicator and degree wheel locally.
So, those numbers that Ray had were they at .050 lift?

I dont have anything radical planned for the bike right now. I do want to get better rubber for it, and improve the braking. Little stuff like recovering the seat and getting a new side panel for it and paint. An aluminum swingarm would be cool with a wider rear tire.

Man is my back sore right now. The wife said you will never get it in yourself. I did it, just takes some sweat, patience and muscle.
Running good, needs some fine tuning, but sounds crisper and nastier than before.
How long will a new engine blow smoke for? I started it in our underground parking and filled it with smoke:D
I hope the weather holds out and i can go for a ride tomorrow, supposed to snow

It looks good! Take it out & put some miles on it, varying rpm from idle to 6000 rpm but NEVER lug it! Ray.

Thanks to this site and all the nice bikes that inspired me or this would never have been done.
This project has been a real treat the last couple of days, FINALLY having all the parts to finish, getting the engine together last night and installing it today. I have built lots of engines from dirtbikes to hotrods but this was my first street bike.
 
Personally I would give it 2 or 3 heat cycles, then go out and give it some hard accelleration and engine braking runs to seat the rings. Like Ray said, never lug it. I'm a fan of "drive it like you stole it" to make sure the rings seal really good and as fast as possible. Engine braking using the gears is just as important as accelleration to ensure a good seal. BTW...really nice job you done!

Gearhead, where did you order your stainless bolt kit? Im about to tear down and rebuild my 1980 GS750 and never liked using steel with aluminum. This being my first Japanese bike I wanna do it all correct the first time.

I got my stainless bolts from www.stainlesscycle.com
I ordered the 16v 1100 kit as they are virtually the same as the 80-82 750.

That is the cover for the oil pressure sensor warning light and oil temp gauge sensor.
