My wife bought me a HONDA!

So...I'm sitting at the computer desk browsing through the gsr last night and my wife is sitting in her recliner with the laptop. She asks me," Do you like Honda CB900Fs?" I say, "yeah, they are nice classic muscle bikes like the 1100E." She says "oh, there is one for sale on craigslist for $500."

Sent an e-mail asking for a phone number. Got the number this morning, went up and bought it for $480. I love my wife.

Nice find - and a good price assuming it's not too trashed.

Hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks to have Hondaline sportkit rearsets.

The fairing is fugly.

The fairing is a Greer, first thing that's comin off, makes it a booger to work on. The pegs seem to be in the stock location, unless the whole aluminum peg mounting system gets replaced. It has a 4-1 of unknown origin (flaky chrome) from the head to collector, then someone fabricated a mid pipe and stuck on a yoshi can. Uni foam filters:-k. Nice bend to the bars, I like them. everything is there and she turns over and sputters every once in a while, but I haven't gotten her lit yet.

Wondering if I should flip it, or part it out or fix her up. I kinda like it. Pretty comfy. Needs paint...bad. I'll see if I can get her to run and take it from there. What do you guys think?

The pegs seem to be in the stock location, unless the whole aluminum peg mounting system gets replaced.

It has sportkit rearsets. The US 750F's, 900F's and 1100F's got high bars and peg assemblies that put the riders feet further forward. Honda made the non-US peg assemblies along with lower handlebars and different switches and cables available as an optional Hondaline package.

Your bike is fitted with sportkit rearsets - this included the backing plates, front pegs, linkage style shifter and brake lever. It looks like someone maybe just swapped the pegs at some point though as it doesn't appear to be the complete Hondaline kit. The complete kit included a RH switchblock that had top exiting cables (to provde tank clearance with the lower bars). Your bike seems to have a non-sportkit RH control as the cables exit from the bottom.

People regularly pay $150 to $250 for the sportkit rearset assemblies on eBay.

I'm a little partial to the F bikes, so my recommendation would be to keep it (of course). If you do, there's a site almost as good as this one that caters to them (www.cb1100f.net).

The DOHC Hondas respond well to mods - the blue and white one in my signature started life as a 1982 US model CB900F.

If you're on the fence about keeping or selling it - check the charging system as they're a common failure point. All of the Honda DOHC series can get expensive quickly if they're not maintained well - valves in particular must be adjusted regularly. Burnt valves are a common result of poor maintenance and are an expensive fix given that the engine must come out of the frame to remove the head.

The CV's do not respond well to pod filters .

Yep, I already checked out cb1100f.net last night right after I saw the ad. That's one reason i jumped on it as it seems to have a big following like the GSs. I'd really love to keep it, but it sure would be nice to have more money to throw at the GS. But 2 bikes is twice as nice. Oh...decisions....The wife may really regret this pretty soon. I foresee lotsa money getting spent around here this fall.

It's nice to have a choice of bikes to ride.
I used to have an '84 V-65 Sabre as well as the Suzie.
Had to sell it after a couple of years. It was actually too smooth and got boring to ride. Besides, I could never find a nice rack for the back to carry stuff.
So that made it somewhat useless for me. (no, I do not like tank bags or having to carry a back-pack).

Have fun and perhaps you can teach the wife unit.

Get it running, get it safe, make it pretty, sell it for top dollar, or keep it. You will know by then.
Just don't buy anything expensive it does not need until you decide if you are keeping it.

What a great looking bike....from the sounds of things, and after seeing it...I think you got one heck of a deal! I have a couple old CB's so I'm a Honda lover as well, so you know what my suggestion is..KEEP IT!! Parts are plentiful, and it will be a joy to ride. Enjoy

IT RUNS!!! just went and got four new plugs and a battery put them in and boom! fired right up, idles fine, took it up the street and back twice, runs pretty darn good! Smokes some. Think it may just be valve seals and guides, maybe it'll clear out with time but I doubt it. Not nearly as torquey as the 1100e. Gotta wind it up to get it to make power. Still prolly needs some tuning though. I think she's a keeper!! Here's a vid of her running.

Get it working correctly and run it a good while, run it long, run it hard. If it's been sitting too long it can't help but smoke. Valve stem seals, rings, all that stuff needs to run.
